Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)

GMC Sierra sales kept Big Red’s full-size truck range in fourth place year-over-year in the full-size mainstream pickup truck segment during the third quarter of 2022. It posted a five percent decrease in sales to 50,169 units. The Ford F-Series (see running Ford F-series sales) continued in first place from last quarter with a slight three percent decline to 167,962 units. The Ram Pickup moved up to the second slot with a similar three percent decrease to 118,106 units. The Sierra’s corporate cousin, the Chevy Silverado (see running Chevy Silverado sales), slipped to a close third place with a five percent decline (like the Sierra) to 117,198 units.

The Toyota Tundra followed in fifth with a 43 percent increase to 30,203 units – the only model to show a gain during the quarter. The Nissan Titan landed in last place with a segment-worst 74 percent drop to 1,275 units. Nissan has no plans to redesign the Titan, indicating that the pickup will be discontinued after the current generation.

From a segment share standpoint, the Sierra held a 10 percent share, down one percentage point. The F-Series maintained its 35 percent segment share. The Ram Pickup held a 24 percent share, down one percentage point, with the Silverado seeing the same levels of share and movement. The Tundra earned a six percent share, up two percentage points, while the Titan’s share was essentially nil, down one percentage point.

Overall, the full-size pickup segment contracted two percent to 484,913 units during Q3 2022, meaning that Sierra sales slightly underperformed the segment average.

On a combined basis, sales of the two full-size GM pickup offerings, the GMC Sierra and Chevy Silverado, declined five percent to 167,367 units. This wasn’t enough for General Motors to keep the best-seller crown in the full-size truck space, placing the automaker slightly behind cross-town rival Ford by less than 600 deliveries. When it comes to the volumes seen here, those 600 deliveries are essentially a rounding error.

The GM Authority Take

GMC Sierra sales fell during Q3 2022, as they did for most of the field including the Silverado. But this time, The General could not claim the top spot in overall full-size pickup truck sales like it has.

On-again, off-again production disruptions are most likely to blame, including the ongoing global semiconductor microchip shortage as well as other parts shortages affecting production and inventory levels across the automotive industry that could last well into the 2024 calendar year.

For GM in particular, production of the Sierra 1500 and Silverado 1500 full-size pickups resumed at the GM Fort Wayne Assembly plant in Indiana following a two-week shutdown in April. In July, GM idled production at its Fort Wayne plant for a week due to a shortage of semiconductor chips. The company then announced it had cleared out 20,000 incomplete vehicles during the month. Last month, GM Authority learned that some units of the 2022 and 2023 GMC Sierra 1500 are built without a hood insulator and without functional power outlets. Just this month, production of 2023 GMC Sierra HD Regular Cab and Double Cab body styles is under constraint.

2023 GMC Sierra 1500 AT4X AEV Edition

Transaction prices across the industry continue to rise, including for the GMC Sierra and Chevy Silverado. ATPs saw an increase of over eight percent for the Sierra and over nine percent for the Silverado in Q2 2022. The average amount paid for a Sierra 1500 or Sierra HD stood at $67,565.

Yet sales remain strong for GM’s pickups since high average transaction prices are now the norm for the full-size pickup segment as consumers show a willingness to pay increasingly more and more for these trucks. In fact, over 14 percent of new car payments topped $1,000 in Q3 2022. That compares to over 12 percent in Q2 2022 and over eight percent in Q3 2021. In addition, more than one in four buyers who financed an electric vehicle committed to a monthly payment over $1,000. That bodes well for the upcoming 2024 GMC Sierra EV Denali (more on that below). Better yet, a whopping 43 percent of pickup owners plan to own an electric truck in the next decade.

2022 GMC Sierra 1500 Denali Ultimate

A year ago GM revealed the refreshed the 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 with new exterior styling, a completely overhauled cabin, powertrain improvements, as well as the addition of the range-topping Sierra Denali Ultimate and the all-new Sierra AT4X off-roader. The Sierra Denali Ultimate is GMC’s most luxurious pickup yet, while the Sierra AT4X is (mostly) GMC’s equivalent to the new Silverado ZR2.

The 2023 GMC Sierra 1500 introduces only a handful of changes and updates as compared to the full model refresh introduced for the 2022 model year. One of those includes the addition of a new Graphite Edition package on the base Sierra Pro trim. The big news for 2023 is the debut of the first-ever 2023 GMC Sierra 1500 AT4X AEV Edition, which promises to push the capability of the new go-anywhere AT4X trim level to new heights. As the most off-road capable factory Sierra 1500 ever, it was developed with input from American Expedition Vehicles (AEV) like on the Chevy Colorado ZR2 Bison and first-ever 2023 Chevy Silverado 1500 ZR2 Bison. Later on in the 2023 model year, the “standard” 2023 GMC Sierra AT4X will receive new equipment from the AEV Edition.

Production of the 2023 GMC Sierra 1500 kicked off at the GM Fort Wayne plant in Indiana on August 20th, 2022, and at the GM Silao plant in Mexico on August 29th, 2022, for both Regular Cab and Crew Cab models, and on September 6th, 2022, for Double Cab models.

2024 GMC Sierra HD Denali Ultimate

Heavy duty customers were finally introduced this month to the refreshed 2024 GMC Sierra HD, with GM debuting fresh exterior styling, a new interior, a revised trim level lineup, powertrain updates, and more. The refresh is highlighted by the arrival of the premium 2024 GMC Sierra HD Denali Ultimate and “seriously off-road capable” 2024 GMC Sierra HD AT4X. The Sierra HD Denali Ultimate trim is characterized by Vader chrome exterior bits, 20-inch Ultra-bright wheels, and an Alpine Umber interior. The new GMC Sierra HD AT4X will be an even-more-capable off-road version of the current GMC Sierra HD AT4 and is set to launch later next year following the arrival of the first 2024 GMC Sierra HD units in early 2023.

Outside, the 2024 GMC Sierra HD boasts an updated exterior design that includes revisions to the front bumper, fascia, and grille. Inside, the refreshed Sierra HD gets a new cockpit with a bigger center screen from the 2022 and newer Sierra 1500. However, the new cockpit is for SLE, SLT, AT4, AT4X, Denali, and Denali Ultimate trim levels, with the base Pro trim continuing with the existing model’s cabin.

2024 GMC Sierra HD Denali Ultimate

Under the hood, the 2024 Sierra HD is once again offered with the optional 6.6L V8 L5P turbodiesel Duramax engine, which is now uprated at 470 horsepower and 975 pound-feet of torque, as compared to the 445 horsepower and 910 pound-feet of torque produced prior to this latest refresh. Standard spec is the naturally aspirated 6.6L V8 L8T gasoline engine, once again rated at 401 horsepower and 464 pound-feet of torque. Both engines pair with the Allison-branded 10-speed automatic transmission, which replaces the GM six-speed equipped by gasoline-powered models previously.

Max towing figures are rated at 21,900 pounds for 2500 HD Crew Cab models, 22,500 pounds for 2500HD, and 36,000 pounds for 3500 HD. A wide variety of available trailering assistance tech can be had via the GMC ProGrade trailering system.

Production of the 2023 GMC Sierra HD started at the GM Flint plant in Michigan on July 18th, 2022.

2024 GMC Sierra HD AT4

In other news, after introducing the GMC Hummer EV Pickup and GMC Hummer EV SUV, the Professional Grade brand has debuted its third fully electric truck in October – the Sierra EV. Debuting in Denali Edition 1, AT4 and Elevation trims, the new electric truck features shares it platform with the Silverado EV, but features a unique exterior and interior. It also gets a fixed panoramic glass roof, and front-end lighting animation. Just like the two GMC Hummer EV model, the all-electric Sierra rides on GM’s BT1 platform while making use of GM’s Ultium battery system and Ultium Drive motors.

With the introduction of refreshed Sierra 1500 and Sierra HD models featuring expanded lineups, and the first-ever Sierra EV, we expect Sierra sales to improve over time for GM’s premium full-size pickup truck. This is especially true as GMC ups its game with industry leading variants like the luxurious Denali Ultimate and highly off-road capable AT4X, including the special edition from AEV. As we see it, the only thing that could stop this growth are production constraints, bottlenecks, and general issues.

  1. Could it also be that an LT/ SLE is running $55,000+ and consumers are passing/ staying out of the market?

    Reply
    1. That, as well as rising interest rates – the economy being in the toilet (with zero sign of improvement any time soon) – and GM still not being able to get the trucks people actually want on lots.

It’s a wonder they were only down 5%.

  2. When you start making trucks look like cars. This is what you get! When you buy a truck it should look like a truck inside and out. Not surprised sales have decreased!

    1. yep, they need to go back to 2 doors or only extended cabs. This big 4 door crap has ruined what trucks once were. Todays trucks are the 80’s minivans. the beds are all but useless, so small because of the big 4 doors.

  3. Getting rid of that bull nose snout scoop and the glacial sized grill would be a great startto improving sales!!!!!!!

  4. Could be selling trucks with non functional features with a promise of retrofit and not following through on that promise in a timely fashion is catching up with sales. Why buy a truck from GM and wait for a year so far to all the features you paid for to work.
Buy a vehicle that is complete when you drive it off the lot ! Wake up GM fix the units you already sold and maybe re-establish trust in your business and product.

  5. This what happens when you advertise a truck with certain features like Super Cruise then can’t add it or sell it. Also as Dave put it, the promise to add features when they come in but take too long to come in. And the last thing is and most important, only giving $50 credit for something that’s not on the truck to make the customer feel good but still hiding the fact that they still charging $1500 for the feature that you can’t use.

  6. Our farm needs a new work truck, nothing fancy. Am looking at both the Silverado and Sierra. It’s no wonder that the Chevy outsells the GMC, the GMC is close to $1,500 more … $1,500 sealed the deal for a new Chevy.

    1. that 1500 is most likely due to the mandatory 3 years of Onstar subscription. I was really torn between the two until the forced $1500 markup.

  7. The problem is dealers can’t get the inventory consumers really want. Dealers are getting stuck with slow moving low end four cylinder trucks. The consumers are wanting higher end trucks with leather, 6.2 V8’s, and Diesel engines. The 2.7 L four cylinder seems to be a great engine, so far but it’s going to take a while to change the public opinion of a four cylinder in a full size truck. The engine works really well. It’s just a mental thing. For a daily driver and occasional towing, it’s perfect. If GM wants to market something. That’s something to market. It won’t sell itself.

    1. exactly- and the dudes buying the trucks for around-town will just look at the new colorado/canyons and hop in one of those- especially since it has the exact same engine and same general tunes to it. So it really doesnt make any sense that GM would still offer the 2.7 in a 1500

  8. Well, I did order a truck back on 3/9/2022, which was built 6/20/2022, and is still sitting at the factory.
Of course you are not going to get sales when you aren’t shipping trucks.
Had my dealer update my order to a 2023 3-weeks ago, it still hasn’t been accepted.
So yeah, expect sales to be down when you aren’t building or accepting orders.

  9. coworkers 2018 with just 80k on the clock is ticking and running pretty terribly, he has had plenty of other electrical problems in the time he has had it. I think people are scared of GM quality and known engine issue with eh DOD. I would maybe buy a new unit with the AFM removed for chip reasons, but they only come with the questionable 8 speed that seems to be another lawsuit issue.
