The GM Authority Take

GMC Acadia sales made a solid showing, increasing this quarter along with GM’s other offerings in this space, the Chevy Traverse and Blazer.

The 2022 GMC Acadia received a bevy of changes, including the deletion of the base SL, with the SLE now being the entry-level trim. In addition, the 2.5L four-cylinder LCV engine has been discontinued for the 2022 model year, as was the five-passenger seating option that was previously available on the Acadia AT4 trim.

The 2023 GMC Acadia arrives with minimal changes over the previous year. Production of the 2023 GMC Acadia started at the GM Spring Hill plant in Tennessee on June 10th, 2022.

On a related note, the 2019 GMC Acadia was identified as one of the best certified pre-owned three-row crossovers available for less than $30,000 by the automotive editors behind Kelley Blue Book.

This month Honda unveiled the all-new, fourth-generation 2023 Honda Pilot as a Chevy Traverse and GMC Acadia rival. One of the big highlights is the debut of the new TrailSport variant, which is offered as the “most off-road capable Honda SUV ever.” Framed as more of a GMC Acadia AT4 rival than a Traverse one, the new Honda Pilot TrailSport is equipped with all-terrain tires as standard, as well as steel skid plates, higher ground clearance, and off-road suspension tuning.

In answer to that and other recent offerings from competitors, plenty of changes are headed the Acadia’s way for the 2024 model year, as GMC will overhaul (redesign and re-engineer) the vehicle. The biggest change will be a return to larger dimensions, much like the first-generation model that preceded the current, second-gen. This next-gen Acadia will ride on a longer wheelbase, allowing for a more spacious cabin and a bigger third-row seat, while also delivering more cargo room. Also, the all-new Acadia will offer GM Super Cruise for the first time ever. GM Super Cruise is the automaker’s semi-autonomous driver assist system, offering hands-free vehicle operation for extended highway travel.

2024 GMC Acadia prototype

We’ve spied the 2024 GMC Acadia prototype undergoing testing in July and in February, giving us a good look at its exterior proportions. We can already see that the upcoming model has a more upright stance reminiscent of the GMC Yukon full-size SUV. More recently, we captured the first spy photos of the upcoming 2024 GMC Acadia interior, revealing a new center stack and infotainment screen configuration.

In order to compete in a crowded segment full of popular nameplates with refreshed and all-new models, GMC is upping the ante with a bigger, better Acadia on the way.

  1. No, these sales are not impressive. Even with massive increases, presumably due to actual production of the vehicle, barely beating the Pathfinder and a dying Nissan is not something to pound the chest about.

Both Traverse and Acadia have lost massive amounts of market share and momentum over the last year, and GM just pushed back the redesigns to 2024.

This is the most competitive segment and they haven’t been giving any attention to it recently. Major misstep and oversight by GM.

I was waiting to buy a new Acadia in 2024. I will not be waiting until 2025 (won’t buy first model year).
