GM Mexico Head Says Country Will Miss 2030 EV Production Target

In order to adapt to the changing automotive world, GM has set a goal to launch 30 new EVs worldwide by calendar year 2025. In order to facilitate this goal and expand EV production even further by 2030, GM is working with countries like Mexico to boost production levels. Now, it seems as though Mexico won’t reach its own 2030 EV target.

GM Mexico head Francisco Garza expects only 15 percent of vehicles manufactured in the country to be electric vehicles, according to a report by Reuters. This drastically undercuts statements by Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, who says Mexico is on track to have 50 percent of its vehicle production consist of EVs.

Garza notes that the Mexican government’s official goal is to reach 30 percent of production by 2030. Meanwhile, a spokesperson for the Mexican Automotive Industry Association (AMIA) quoted the goal between 30 and 50 percent.

“Obviously there are factors that could speed up that adoption,” Garza said, adding that EV production could reach 30 percent due to falling costs as production moves to a larger scale, government incentives and expanding availability of charging stations.

To be clear, the percentages refer to electric-powered vehicles as a whole, not just GM EVs.

As it currently stands, GM Mexico is making strides in expanding its EV output. Back in 2021, GM announced its plan to invest $1 billion in the Ramos Arizpe plant to provide the additional tooling needed for greater EV production. Thus far, GM has confirmed the 2024 Chevy Blazer EV and 2024 Chevy Equinox are to be built at this facility, and possibly the upcoming Ultium-based Honda Prologue crossover.

The Ramos Arize plant will become GM’s fourth North American EV manufacturing facility, joining the Spring Hill plant in Tennessee, the Factory Zero plant and the Lake Orion plant in Michigan, as well as the CAMI plant in Ingersoll, Ontario.

    1. As far as I know, the American continent is only ONE and Mexico is part of it, as well as all the countries of the continent! It would be more correct for you to ask not to bring it to the United States!

  3. Spring Hill, Factory Zero, Lake Orion, CAMI, and Ramos. I count that as five, not four.
