Chevy Trailblazer And Buick Encore GX Lead Korea’s Exports In October

General Motors has just reported that the Chevy Trailblazer was South Korea’s most exported vehicle for the month of October, leading the South Korean auto industry’s shipments to international markets.

The automaker celebrates that the Chevy Trailblazer became the No. 1 domestic exporter among South Korea’s passenger cars in October, a feat that reinforces the popularity and strong commercial performance of GM’s lineup of subcompact crossovers built in the Asian country – whose main export market is United States.

According to the latest monthly statistics report of the South Korean automotive industry published by the Korea Automobile Manufacturers Association (KAMA), the Chevy Trailblazer ended the month of October with a total of 17,958 units exported to foreign markets, allowing it to lead ranking as the country’s most exported passenger vehicle for the first time since its introduction in early 2020.

It should be noted that the 17,958 units exported last month that both GM Korea and KAMA attribute to the Chevy Trailblazer include the registrations for the Buick Encore GX, since the company does not share the individual figures for each model but unites them in a single registration for being vehicles of the same project. As we have emphasized before, GM’s South Korean subsidiary treats both vehicles as a single model line using the term ‘Trailblazer’.

In any case, the combined export volume experienced by the Chevy Trailblazer and Buick Encore GX in October represents a considerable increase from the nearly 12,000 units per month that averaged during the first 26 months of sale. Earlier this year, the crossover lineup surpassed 300,000 units exported from South Korea with an exact total of 311,023 shipments through March.

Chevy Trailblazer on the line at GM’s Bupyeong Plant

The Chevy Trailblazer is considered a “global” model that targets both the South Korean market and the United States and Canada, its main export destinations. The model, which is manufactured alongside the Buick Encore GX at GM’s Bupyeong plant in Korea, stands out for including some characteristics of a true American SUV such as AWD drive, difficult to find in small SUVs, and the best space utilization in its class.

  1. The Korean plant has no plans to produce new cars since 2028. In a few years they’ll be very interesting.

  2. Da Kia is better, and da Honda, and da Toyota, and da Mazda, and da Volkswagen. I’m sure all these Trailblazers will need to have their MSRP absolutely slashed or low APR financing deals in order to remain competitive with the superior vehicles of other manufacturers offered in the segment. Meanwhile the Hummer EVs are flying outta the factory, I’m sure. 🤣😂 Sounds like a Mary Barra business plan!

    1. At 18,000 units a month, that would be enough to fill a US assembly plant. It is messed up that a so-called “American” brand has so many vehicles imported from Asia and built in Mexico. I would venture to day the transplants build more of their lineup on percentage basis in the US than gm. If I want a Korean car, I would buy a Hyundai or Kia.

      1. 100% Agreed. If gm built something on this platform, in the United States, and with a competitive drivetrain it would skyrocket to the top of my list of cars in this segment. I think gm really dropped the ball not retooling a US plant to make a subcompact plus car or crossover. Turning a productive plant like the one in Lake Orion into a stagnant BEV factory was a shortsighted money grab. If you want a decent vehicle in the segment built in North America, get a Toyota or Mazda.

  3. GM should never have sold the Lordstown plant, they could have been building the Trailblazer and Trax there, even assembling some from parts coming in from South Korea. As Trailblazers hit the lots they are gone based on accounts from Chevy dealers, they cant keep them. The chip shortage and global supply chain issues have severely impacted Trailblazer availability.
