The GM Authority Take
Combined Chevy Tahoe and Suburban sales kept the Bow Tie brand at the top of the mainstream full-size SUV segment. Combined with their corporate cousins, the GMC Yukon and Yukon XL, GM continues to dominate the space with a remarkable 66 percent segment share in spite of competitors’ attempts to compete. That said, sales of the Jeep Wagoneer continue to slowly climb, but even the Suburban moved more units than the Jeep time around. It will also be interesting to see what impact Toyota’s much-needed SUV reboot will have as the new Sequoia goes on sale.
As a reminder, the Tahoe and Suburban were overhauled (re-engineered and redesigned) for the 2021 model year as the 2021 Chevy Tahoe and 2021 Chevy Suburban. The same holds true for the GMC Yukon and Yukon XL, as well as the Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV.
The fully redesigned 2023 Toyota Sequoia that was revealed in January began to arrive at dealerships in October as a contender to the regular-wheelbase Tahoe and Yukon.
Additionally, Stellantis debuted the Jeep Wagoneer L in April as an extended-length variant of the regular-length Wagoneer. When finally launches, the Wagoneer L will rival GM’s own extended-length offerings – the Suburban and Yukon XL. It should boost full-size SUV sales for Stellantis as it joins the new Wagoneer that began selling late last year.
As the competition makes its moves, Chevy is certainly not standing still. The 2023 Chevy Tahoe and 2023 Chevy Suburban are now available to order with GM’s vaunted hands-free, semi-autonomous Super Cruise technology for the first time ever. Production of both models commenced at the GM Arlington plant in Texas on June 18th, 2022.
What’s more, Chevy unveiled a new special edition package for the 2023 Chevy Tahoe – the new 2023Â Chevy Tahoe RST Performance Edition. The enhanced SUV offers those looking for extra pep a set of pursuit-rated upgrades and underhood goodies. The Tahoe RST Performance Edition makes due with the naturally aspirated 6.2L V8 L87 gasoline engine offered on most Tahoe models. From there, however, it’s equipped with the Chevrolet Performance induction and exhaust systems, adding an extra 13 horsepower and seven pound-feet of torque, bringing peak output figures to 433 horsepower and 467 pound-feet of torque. Output is directed to the Tahoe’s four-wheel drive system exclusively by way of the GM 10-speed automatic transmission. Max trailering capacity remains at 7,600 pounds.
Other performance components are taken from the Chevy Tahoe PPV, including unique engine and suspension calibrations, along with 275/55VR20 Firestone Firehawk Pursuit tires. The 2023 Chevy Tahoe RST Performance Edition offers stronger braking power with a 60-mph-to-0 stopping distance of 133 feet thanks to Brembo front and rear brakes. A set of Torch Red finish for the calipers.
Aesthetic upgrades include black RST badges in the rear, while standard sport pedals are found in the cabin. Additionally, the new 2023 Chevy Tahoe RST Performance Edition bundles in the Luxury Package, bringing a set of creature comforts to the full-sizer. The new Performance Edition upgrade is priced at $8,525, with production kicking off later this year.
Beyond that, GM is already testing a refreshed 2024 Chevy Tahoe and 2024 Chevy Suburban. In March, we caught a prototype of the refreshed 2024 Tahoe undergoing testing. The upcoming model will feature revised front and rear fascias, with new two-tiered lighting setup for the front end. Inside, the refreshed models will boast a revised cockpit and layout with larger infotainment screens and other improvements.

I’m eager to seeing what the refreshed Suburban and Tahoe will look like for MY 2024. When will the updated models debut? The most recent prototype of the updated Suburban shows that the High Country is getting a unique interior similar to the Silverado EV not found in the lesser trim levels.
I am eager to get the 4 Tahoes and 6 Suburbans we have had in order since last year. A great vehicle but not able to get inventory to meet the demand!
And the full sized passenger vans are being left behind.
Why?
Because it’s not a cash cow where they can milk their customers to the blood and bone.
