Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)
Chevy Bolt sales continued to rebound during Q3 2022 from nearly non-existent volume at the end of 2021 as a result of the battery recall, associated stop-sale and production stoppage stemming from some vehicles catching on fire. The results enabled the duo to lead the mainstream EV passenger car segment for the first time ever.
Bolt EV sales climbed 62 percent year-over-year to 3,530 units, placing second from last, while Bolt EUV sales leapt 378 percent to 11,179 units, charging to the top. The two Bolt models together saw a cumulative 226 percent increase in sales to 14,709 units, posting a combined 34 percent segment share.

Sales of the Ford Mustang Mach-E (see running Ford Mustang Mach-E sales) dropped to second place with a 77 percent bump in sales to 10,414 units while the Volkswagen ID.4 placed third with a 10 percent increase to 1,660 units. The Kia EV6 and its corporate cousin and platform mate, the Hyundai Ioniq 5, each had a limited launch last fall but still moved 4,996 and 4,800 units, respectively, to fill the fourth and fifth place spots. The Nissan Leaf, introduced over a decade ago as the first model in this space segment, dropped to the bottom with a 46 decline to 1,276 units.
The mainstream EV segment accounted for 42,852 deliveries during Q3 2022, growing a very healthy 128 percent year-over-year, meaning Bolt sales significantly outperformed the segment average.
The two Chevy Bolt models compete in the mainstream electric vehicles (EV) passenger cars segment, in which we currently include all mainstream (non-luxury) BEVs including crossovers, hatchbacks, and sedans. As more EVs enter the market, there will enough similar vehicle types competing against each other to warrant a specific segment. At that time, we will break these out for more specific sales comparisons. Beyond the mainstream EV segment being discussed here, the remaining EV segment is the premium EV market that contains models from Tesla, Audi, Porsche, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Lucid, Cadillac, Jaguar and Genesis. Accordingly, we are not including Tesla models in the mainstream EV passenger car segment sales analysis starting this quarter since they are premium/luxury models, having previously included the Model 3 and Model Y.
It’s also worth noting that Hyundai and Kia offer electric vehicles that also include variants with an internal combustion engine (ICE) and/or hybrid (HEV) and/or plug-in hybrid (PHEV) version. That includes the Hyundai Kona and Hyundai Ioniq (without a number), along with the Kia Niro. Consequently these models do not offer a direct comparison to the Chevy Bolt family. As a result, these particular Hyundai and Kia models are now no longer included in our analysis. A related Hyundai model, the similarly named Ioniq 5, is all-electric, replacing the original Ioniq.
The GM Authority Take
Chevy Bolt sales continued to rebound after GM recalled, issued a stop-sale order, and subsequently shut down production of both the Chevy Bolt EV hatchback and Chevy Bolt EUV crossover due to some vehicles catching fire from a battery-related defect. In fact, the Q3 2022 results is the first time that the all-electric duo led the mainstream EV passenger car segment for the first time ever, with Bolt EUV sales outperforming the Ford Mustang Mach-E and other battery-powered competitors.
After several other lawsuits have been filed over the past year related to the recalls, another class action lawsuit related to battery concerns has been allowed to proceed in court, after being consolidated from eight individual class action lawsuits. The lawsuit alleges that 2017-2022 Chevy Bolt EV and 2022 Bolt EUV vehicles are equipped with defective lithium-ion batteries and defective battery management systems.
In February, the NHTSA closed its Bolt EV and Bolt EUV fire investigation, which was first opened after reports that units of two models had caught fire while charging or when the vehicles were towards the end of the battery charging cycle. GM’s recall included software to address the issue, as well as installation of a replacement battery, if needed. Later, an investigation from battery supplier LG Energy Solution revealed further fires had occurred to vehicles that had received the initial fix, resulting in further recalls from GM. It was eventually determined that the fires were the result of two individual manufacturing defects in the batteries themselves, specifically a torn anode tab as well as a folded separator.
GM’s recalls of the Bolt EV and Bolt EUV is expected to cost a pretty penny, with LG having committed to cover $1.9 billion of them.
Adding to all this drama, GM confirmed that certain buyers of the 2022 Chevy Bolt EV and 2022 Chevy Bolt EUV would receive a retroactive discount of roughly $6,000 after it significantly lowered the price of both models for the 2023 model year. While this was viewed as an act of goodwill by the automaker towards its EV customers, it appears as though the offer comes with a rather questionable stipulation: specifically, the customer must waive rights to sue GM or LG Energy Solution over defects related to the vehicle or its battery pack, safeguarding GM and LG from potential future legal action.
While GM has had a less than an auspicious start with its refreshed Bolt EV and all-new Bolt EUV in the rapidly-growing battery electric vehicle market, the automaker’s progress on battery replacements in existing units and production progress are showing results in positive sales gains. In fact, GM is planning to produce 70,000 new Chevy Bolts next year globally, up from roughly 44,000 units for 2022.
The Bolt EV rides on the GM BEV2 platform and utilize the same single-drive electric motor, which produces 200 horsepower and 266 pound-feet of torque, fed by the 65 kWh lithium-ion battery, which provides 250 miles of range per charge. For the 2023 model year, the Bolt EV gets an illuminated charge port as a new option. See more on the 2023 Bolt EV.
The 2023 Chevy Bolt EUV receives a new Redline Edition, set apart by its black and red Bolt EUV badge on the rear hatch, along with red accent decals on the outside mirror caps. The package also features a set of 17-inch gloss black painted aluminum wheels with red accents. The Redline Edition package can be ordered with the Bolt EUV in the LT trim level, or the well-equipped Premier. A Jet Black leather interior with red accent stitching is available on both trim levels.
Initially entering the market for the 2022 model year, the Bolt EUV features a similar, though not identical design to the smaller Bolt EV. The most substantial differences include a more horizontally-positioned hood, a different C-pillar treatment, and a slightly longer wheelbase, along with a longer rear overhang. It rides on the same GM BEV2 platform and utilizes the same single-drive electric motor, which produces 200 horsepower and 266 pound-feet of torque, fed by the 65 kWh lithium-ion battery, providing 247 miles of range per charge. Unlike the Bolt EV, the Bolt EUV features GM’s vaunted hands-free, semi-autonomous Super Cruise technology.
Production of the 2023 Chevy Bolt EV and 2023 Chevy Bolt EUV commenced at the GM Lake Orion plant in Michigan on July 26th, 2022.

It is nice to read that the Chevy Bolt, which was ignored for years has finally dominated the EV market in America.
Glad to see a sales rebound. But easy to be a leader, when you are pretty much the only one in the race.
Other than the leaf, those other vehicles range anywhere from $40k-$70k. While the Bolt is under $40k for most trims and starts at under $30k.
Eager to order a RHD model here in the UK
Unfortunately you’ll be waiting a while. There’s never been a RHD Bolt and not likely to be anytime in the future.
My Bolt when received hopefully in 2023 will cost just a little over $34,000. here in Montreal.
It would be nice to have more news about the battery recall/replacement for the 2020 or get at last 100% of the value of the car I bought…
Got an email 10 days ago from Chevrolet Canada Customer Care re. our 2022 Bolt EV after I inquired. They stated “we certainly understand the frustration around not being able to charge to the full 100% capacity but at Chevrolet safety is of the upmost importance and we are working with our suppliers to ensure battery delivery as soon as possible. At this time the recall for your battery is not yet ready …”
Man, the battery thing needs to bed put to be for all the previous owners. I understand you gotta get the production line up and running again and I’m grateful they have as we’re expecting one from a order placed in June in a few days/weeks. But you gotta take care of your customers. I have a Tesla model Y. Worst customer service I’ve ever experienced from a car manufacturer. As soon as the Blazer SS is available the tesla will be sold. We have a ‘23 electric blue Bolt EV on order for my wife. Somewhere between Toledo OH and Santa Fe NM. Thought about another model y but the service just sucks and Musk is, well, Musk. Anyhow, last I heard it was on a Norfolk Southern train car. I think they might transfer to a BNSF train somewhere just west of the Mississippi because I don’t believe NFS has any routes much past Kansas City. Drop off in Santa Rosa NM and trucked to Santa Fe from there. It’s been in transit now for almost 3 weeks. Our dealer says somewhere around the 16th of November but the paper work I’ve seen says 11-25…. We will see. Looking forward to it. It’s a zippy little rig perfectly suited for dashing in and out of the narrow downtown SFNM streets
