Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)

Cadillac XT5 sales during the third quarter of 2022 placed the luxury crossover mid-pack in the luxury D-crossover segment when ranked by sales volume. The Lexus RX remained in first place, as it has for the past year, with a five percent decrease in sales to 26,530 units. The Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class (comprised of the GLC-Class and GLC-Class Coupe) followed in second with a 144 percent leap to 19,456 units. The BMW X3 placed third with a four percent bump to 18,453 units, while the Audi Q5 took fourth with a five percent increase to 17,143 units. The Acura MDX rounded out the top five with a 13 percent slide to 9,604 units. The Volvo XC60 placed sixth with a 24 percent drop to 8,421 units, followed by the XT5 in seventh with a 32 percent jump to 7,260 units. The rest of the field each recorded less than 5K deliveries.

From a segment share standpoint, the XT5 held a six percent share, up one percentage point. The RX posted a 21 percent segment share, down two percentage points, while the GLC-Class held a 16 percent share, up a segment-best nine percentage points. The X3 maintained a 15 percent share and the Q5 maintained a 14 percent share. The MDX posted an eight percent share, down one percentage point, while the XC60 held a seven percent share, down two percentage points. The rest of the field each held a segment share of four percent or less.

We should note that Lexus RX sales now include the two-row RX and the three-row RX L, with the two-row model competing against the XT5 and the three-row RXL being a rival to the Cadillac XT6. As such, a more apt comparison would be to pit XT5 and XT6 sales against those of the RX.

Doing so gives Cadillac a combined 12,273 deliveries, which is less than half of the 26,530 units moved by the Lexus RX family.

The luxury D-crossover segment grew five percent to 124,718 units during Q3 2022, meaning XT5 sales significantly outperformed the segment average.

The GM Authority Take

Cadillac XT5 sales continue to be in an upswing as GM has worked on addressing production issues in order to get supply back on track to meet demand.

Production of the 2023 Cadillac XT5 began on June 10th, 2022, at the GM Spring Hill plant in Tennessee, alongside its larger sibling, the Cadillac XT6, as well as the GMC Acadia, and Cadillac Lyriq. However, a year after Consumer Reports recognized the 2022 Cadillac XT5 as being among the most reliable vehicles on sale today, production, supply chain, and quality control issues continue to plague the marque’s bread-and-butter crossover.

In June of this year, the park assist feature for the 2023 XT5 was under constraint. In July, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration launched an investigation into GM over alleged issues with the rearview camera in certain XT5, XT6, and Acadia models. In August, GM started a Customer Satisfaction Program for certain 2022 Cadillac XT5 and 2022 Cadillac XT4 models to address an issue related to a missing accessory grille, reimbursing buyers accordingly. Later that month, GM provided a solution to a front end rattle or clunking sound that affects some 2020 to 2023 model-year Cadillac XT5 units. Finally, in September, GM issued a recall for certain examples of the 2023-model-year XT5 and XT6 crossovers due to an issue related to noncompliant tire certification labels.

GM originally planned to introduce a heavy refresh for the 2023 XT5, but those plans were shelved and the current model will soldier on without a redesign. The last time the XT5 saw a major update was for the 2020 model year.

In the meantime, the 2023 Cadillac XT5 gets the usual new model year paint color changes, while the Cadillac User Experience infotainment with embedded navigation and the Bose Performance 14-speaker sound system becomes standard on Premium Luxury and Sport trim levels.

But the XT5’s main competitor already debuted an all-new model in May as the all-new 2023 Lexus RX. It features a long list of changes and updates that is sure to cement its place at the top of the segment. The new RX features new styling, new tech, and a range of powertrain options highlighted by a new performance hybrid variant.

Going forward, the XT5 will get an overhaul, but the all-new model will be available exclusively in the Chinese market. Even so, GM’s answer is better found in its electric offerings. Already, the all-new electric Cadillac Lyriq crossover, which is larger than the current XT5, is garnering praise. Earlier this month the 2023 Cadillac Lyriq was handed the 2023 Luxury Green Car of the Year award, and nearly two weeks later it was announced as a finalist in the 2023 North American Car, Truck and Utility Vehicle of the Year (NACTOY) Awards.

The Lyriq is in production, albeit in small numbers, at the Spring Hill facility where GM plans to build even more EV models. That could include a new, smaller Cadillac EV crossover, although recent whispers have indicated that the sub-Lyriq model will be built in Mexico. Our spies caught the new small Cadillac electric crossover on the road, sporting an overall demeanor similar to that of the upcoming Chevy Equinox EV.

  1. It’s “pathtiq” how utterly uncompetitive American luxury brands have become. 25 years ago Lincoln and Cadillac were fighting for the top spot with 200k unit sales a year. The fact that Lexus can outsell Cadillac nearly 4 to 1 is shameful and speaks volumes of poor leadership at gm and Ford this century.

  2. They could at least offer new interior schemes that aren’t mostly black and include the stitched steering wheel center from the Platinum on all trims. It’s literally in your face every time you get in the car, and dimpled plastic doesn’t cut it at Cadillac prices.

  3. I simply don’t understand how this company simply just surrenders to the competition especially in North America. They’re banking on EV’s to take them to another level when they have no idea if the public is all in on EV’s and if the Electric Grid will be ready to handle all of these electric vehicles. This is such poor management for one division to go all in on EV’s so early and forget about ICE Crossovers. The logical thing to do is to go first to Hybrids then EV’s, but GM didn’t think Hybrids were the way to go meanwhile the Rav 4 and Lexus RX have hybrid versions and are first in sales in their segemnts. I could go on and on but I’ll let others comment.
