The GM Authority Take

Buick Envision sales did well enough against rivals to push the premium compact crossover into second place in its segment during the third quarter of 2022. GM’s combined sales performance of the Envision and Cadillac XT4 pushed the automaker to the top.

Production disruptions associated with, but not limited to, the ongoing global semiconductor microchip shortage makes one wonder what the sales performance could have been for the Buick Envision if more units were available at U.S. dealers. Even in June, Envision inventory was tight due to plant shutdown and transportation complications. Furthermore, production of the 2023 Buick Envision was pushed back to August after originally planned for early April. The Envision is assembled at the GM Jinqiao plant in Shanghai, China, and then distributed to each of the four markets where the Buick brand does business: the United States, Canada, and Mexico (comprising the North American market), as well as locally across China.

One way GM is addressing inventory supplies of imported models is by adopting a port consensus order model for the 2023 Buick Envision. That means that the automaker produces the vehicles which it thinks are needed, as defined by existing constraints. The vehicles are then sent to port, at which time dealers can select from the models available for inventory.

The 2022 Buick Envision remains a strong model for the premium marque, with the 2022 Buick Envision among the best new crossovers under $40,000 by Consumer Reports following a recognition just a few months earlier, where the publication named the 2021 Buick Envision a top luxury SUV to buy. The 2022 Buick Envision saw minor changes and updates over the 2021 previous year including additional content for the optional 2022 Buick Envision Sport Touring package.

As a reminder, the 2021 Buick Envision was completely overhauled (redesigned and re-engineered). Besides an all-new platform, mechanicals, exterior design, and cabin, the 2021 Envision added the Avenir as the range-topping trim – a first for the Envision nameplate.

The 2023 Envision represents the third model year of the premium compact crossover’s second generation. It remains largely unchanged from the current 2022 model year, save for a few updates to the color palette and package lineup. The crossover will continue to be powered by GM’s turbocharged 2.0L four-cylinder LSY gasoline engine, rated at 228 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, as the only engine offering in North America. The four-cylinder is paired with the GM nine-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel-drive is standard, while all-wheel-drive is optional.

2024 Buick Envision refresh prototype

The 2024 Buick Envision will introduce a model refresh that will include new styling and a revised interior. Recently, we spied a refreshed 2024 Buick Envision testing in prototype form. The new look will draw inspiration from the all-new 2023 Buick Envista that recently went on sale in China and that is being considered for North America. The model incorporates sleek, streamlined styling lines and taut surfaces. The Envista, in turn, incorporates the styling of the Buick Wildcat EV concept, which will primarily provide design inspiration for Buick’s future all-electric vehicles, but will also lend inspiration for future internal-combustion based vehicles as well.

2025 Buick Electra EV crossover prototype

In order to boost sales, GM continues addressing supply chain issues and related production interruptions – a set of circumstances faced by the entire auto industry at large – while introducing new and updated models. That includes Buick’s plans to launch its first electric vehicle in 2024 and go full EV by 2030. We expect the EV model rollout to begin with an upcoming compact model as well as a larger, midsize Buick Electra EV crossover that we spied testing. Both models will like carry names like “Electra E1” through “Electra E9,” as GM recently filed to trademark.
