American Axle To Supply Axles For 2023 Chevy Colorado And GMC Canyon

The 2023 Chevy Colorado introduces an all-new, third generation for the mid-size pickup truck. With production of the current, second-generation Colorado winding down, GM will soon get ready for 2023 model-year production, and we now know who will manufacture the axles for the 2023 Chevy Colorado and its corporate platform-mate, the GMC Canyon.

American Axle & Manufacturing (AAM) has been selected as the supplier for 2023 Colorado and Canyon axles. As a Tier 1 Automotive and Mobility Supplier, American Axle designs, engineers and manufactures its products directly to and for OEM applications.

“AAM is pleased to expand our partnership with GM as the new supplier of axles for GM’s next-generation mid-size pickup trucks. We look forward to providing our latest and most efficient driveline technologies for the Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon,” said AAM Chairman and Chief Executive Officer David C. Dauch. “This vehicle program continues AAM’s mission to support growth in advanced vehicle technologies.”

It’s worth noting that these axles for the upcoming 2023 Chevy Colorado and 2023 GMC Canyon will be built at American Axle’s Three Rivers Manufacturing Facility in Michigan.

For reference, American Axle & Manufacturing has a history of working with GM to provide axles for its products. More recently, American Axle was given sole responsibility of the production of front and rear axles for Chevy Silverado units built at the GM Oshawa Plant.

As a reminder, the all-new 2023 Chevy Colorado was unveiled last July. Under the hood will be the new turbocharged 2.7L I4 L2R engine in base trim levels, which develops 237 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque. The familiar turbocharged 2.7L I4 L3B gasoline engine 310 horsepower and 390 pound-feet of torque in the 2.7L Turbo Plus tune, or 310 horsepower and 430 pound-feet of torque in the 2.7L Turbo High-Output tune, is available as well. The new-generation GM eight-speed automatic transmission will be the sole transmission option. The 2023 GMC Canyon debuted in August and gets the Turbo High-Output variant of the L3B engine across all trim levels.

The third-generation Colorado and Canyon ride on an updated version of the GMT 31XX platform used by the previous generation, known internally within GM as 31XX-2.

Production of the new 2023 Chevy Colorado and 2023 GMC Canyon is slated to kick off on January 25th, 2023 at the GM Wentzville plant in Missouri. Official pricing details will follow closer to the start of production.

  1. AAM has been a great supplier of axle powertrains to GM for a very long time. When will the announcements come that AAM will be a major supplier of electric motors to GM for its electric trucks? AAM has proven to be a great tier-1 supplier, never under constraints, and always on time with its products to assembly plants.

  2. The basic design of gm axle assemblies has been same old same old for a long long time.
