White Is The Most Popular Car Color In 2022, Says Study

White is the most popular car color in 2022. According to a study by iSeeCars that examined over 6.1 million cars on the road to determine the share for each color, white holds a 26 percent share of all color choices. White was followed closely by black and grey at 22 percent and 18 percent, respectively. This means that grayscale-colored cars (white, black, gray, and silver) account for 78.5 percent of all vehicles on the road.

White is typically the most popular color for vehicles every year. As GM Authority reported earlier this year, white was also the most popular car color for 2021, with 35 percent of all new cars built in 2021 painted some variation of white. Black took a distant second place at 18 percent, while Grey rose in popularity by two percent, accounting for 14 percent of the market share.

The distribution of colors among states demonstrates an interesting trend, as Northern states tend to have more variety of car colors, while Southern states tend to lean towards white. This distribution is likely related to the amount of sun exposure and heat in each region, as white cars tend not to be as hot after sitting in the sun as compared to darker colors.

Although white may still be the most popular color on vehicles today, colorful cars are beginning to set new trends within the auto industry at large. For 2022-2023, GM‘s coating supplier, BASF, created a new color collection titled New Array that aims to provide unique color shades for vehicles while maintaining a focus on functionality. This year’s color palette is fairly diverse, featuring a broad spectrum of colors from the traditional white, silver and black to eye-catching green and yellow.

  2. Come on, they offer lots of other colors. White happens to be the easiest to keep clean. Black however is not, but when it’s clean it’s beautiful. Apparently there are lots of white cars in the south and west because it stays cooler.
Now maybe GM does need new leadership, I’m not sure about that, but it’s not because people are buying white, black and gray cars. BTW, I have a Summit White GMC Sierra HD and a Shark Gray C7 Stingray and neither GM nor the Government dictated which color that I needed to buy. I made the decision all on my own.

  4. Had several all white with crome and loved them. When time to trade, no white or any trucks available period. I took the first thing off the truck which was a Satin Steel GMC SIERRA 1500 SLT LIMITED. Change for me but I’ll be happy when I get all the missing chips.

  5. Popular? It seems like white is the most popular for the factory to produce, but not the most popular to own. Stop discontinuing the more difficult colors like Red Tin Coat and Fairway Green.

  8. White would not have been my choice. But there was so little to choose from the day I bought my 2020 Trax LS in haste. In fact, if my salesman would have explained the features I could have had on a Trax LT or a Trax Premier, I would have gotten one of those instead .

  9. White is BORING and Black and Gray/Silver, not a fan, black is pretty, but I would prefer DARK HUNTER GREEN metallic.

  10. Had a dark hunter green Yukon once.very nice color depending on the vehicle. I find the metalic satin steel actually changes color in different light looks a silver blue sometimes and almost dark grey sometimes. My white just stayed white but easy to clean.

    1. Some people do love green but not enough that dealers will order many in fear they will be a slow seller and then have to give a good deal to move it. Resale also suffers when dealers see subtract $ for a color they usually subtract more $.
