Potential 2023 GMC Canyon AT4X AEV Edition Caught Testing

A few months ago, GM revealed the all-new 2023 GMC Canyon. Overhauled for its third generation, the new GMC Canyon sports new exterior styling, an overhauled interior, an all-new powertrain, and a bevy of tech. One of the most anticipated trims of the new model has been the off-road-capable Canyon AT4X. And now, GM Authority spies have caught an interesting Canyon AT4X prototype undergoing testing. The sighting hints that The General is working on a Canyon AT4X AEV Edition.

This particular 2023 GMC Canyon AT4X is finished in Volcanic Red Tintcoat (RPO code GNT) and wears an unannounced AEV-branded snorkel, suggesting that the Canyon is next in line after the recently-announced Sierra AT4X AEV Edition to get the AEV Edition treatment.

In addition to the snorkel, the truck shows signs of rough use, as it seems to have sustained damage to the rear bumper. There’s also extensive scrapes on the front skid plate and safari bar.

The truck also appears to have put to good use the beadlock-capable wheels. Incidentally, engineers have removed the gray decorative ring included with the AT4X model.

As a reminder, the Canyon AT4X adds the following features as standard:

  • A three-inch factory lift
  • Ultra-wide track
  • 33-inch Mud Terrain (MT) tires
  • Multimatic DSSV shocks
  • Front and rear e-lockers
  • Underbody skid plates
  • Baja drive mode

All that gives the truck 10.7 inches of ground clearance from the factory, along with a 36.9-degree approach angle, 25.0-degree departure angle and 24.5-degree breakover angle.

In addition, this 2023 GMC Canyon AT4X is also equipped with the Edition 1 package. This extremely limited package takes the already-capable AT4X and pushes it to the next level by adding underbody cameras, an off-road bumper with a safari bar, a winch, the aforementioned 17-inch beadlock capable wheels, a reconfigurable bed rail system, a performance front skid plate, and of course Edition 1 badging.

Under the hood, the AT4X uses the same powertrain as the rest of the Canyon lineup, which is GM’s turbocharged 2.7L I4 L3B gasoline engine in High-Output tune, rated at 310 horsepower and 430 pound-feet of torque. Power is sent to the wheels through GM’s 8-speed automatic transmission. 2023 GMC Canyon Elevation trims will be available with either 2WD or 4WD, while the AT4, AT4X, and Denali trim levels will be equipped with 4WD as standard.

The third-generation Canyon rides on an updated version of the same GMT 31XX platform used by the previous generation models. The updated architecture is known internally by GM as 31XX-2, and is shared with the Canyon’s corporate platform-mate, the 2023 Chevy Colorado.

The new 2023 GMC Canyon will be available in the first half of the 2023 calendar year, with production scheduled to begin on January 25th, 2023 at the GM Wentzville plant in Missouri.

    1. In early 2020 I decided I needed a new compact pickup to replace my S10 ZR2 that had 175K miles. I bought a 2 door Colorado ZR2 for $37,500…..I look @ these $60K+ trucks and realize my Colorado was one of the wisest decisions I have ever made in my life….I still don’t understand people who buy a glorified station wagon with 4 doors and no useable pickup bed to make it worthwhile to own.
