The No.99 GMC Hummer EV Chip Ganassi Racing team is still in the hunt for the season championship after becoming the first reserve team to complete in an X Prix Final.
Finals Day for the Antofagasta Minerals Copper X Prix began with the No.99 GMC Hummer EV Chip Ganassi Racing team in the garage without hope of chasing the championship title after a third-place finish in Semi-Final 1. However, Rosberg X Racing [RXR] was subsequently dropped from the finalists lineup following a technical issue, opening an opportunity for the No.99 team to take the open finalist position to become to the first-ever reserve team to appear in a Final.
“Even though there was a very slim chance of our GMC Hummer EV team getting that call, we were still wanting to hold on to hope and remained ready just in case,” said team driver Kyle LeDuc. “The adrenaline was absolutely pumping once we got the call, but the team did a really great job of jumping into action. I was able to take a deep breath at the starting line and re-focus.”
“We probably had about two minutes to get our gear on and then just scrambled, I have honestly never put a suit on that fast in my life!” added team driver Sara Price. “But yeah, talk about an emotional roller-coaster.”
LeDuc and Price drove the No.99 GMC Hummer EV to second place, a strong showing considering the team was previously classified sixth. Unfortunately, penalties dropped the team’s standing to fourth overall, deleting any hope for a podium finish at the event.
Nevertheless, the points gained mean the team is still in the hunt for a championship win as the season is set to wrap with a finale in Uruguay. That said, the odds of taking home a championship remain slim as the No.99 GMC Hummer EV team faces down a 28-point deficit to championship leaders RXR.
The Season 2 finale, Energy X Prix in Punta del Este, is set to take place November 26th through the 27th.
