No. 48 Nascar Chevy Driver Alex Bowman To Sit Out Charlotte

Alex Bowman, driver of the No. 48 Nascar Chevy Camaro ZL1, will not race on October 9th, 2022 at the Charlotte Roval due to lingering concussion-like symptoms.

Bowman was involved in a wreck on September 25th, 2022 at Texas Motor Speedway. While running in eighth place at Texas, Bowman’s No. 48 Nascar Chevy blew a right rear tire on Lap 98, causing him to spin. The rear of his Camaro race car struck the outside wall, jarring Bowman.

“With my health continuing to be my number one priority I will not return to racing this weekend at the Nascar Cup Series Race at Charlotte Motor Speedway,” Bowman said in a statement on social media. “I am continuing to make strides in my recovery to make sure I can return to competition at 100 percent.”

Noah Gragson, a regular Xfinity Series driver, will pilot the No. 48 Nascar Chevy again this weekend. He subbed for Bowman during last weekend’s race at Talladega as well, but was unfortunately involved in an early-race wreck.

“Alex’s health is our first priority,” said Jeff Andrews, president and general manager of Hendrick Motorsports. “We’re focused on supporting his recovery and seeing him back in his race car when the time is right. Alex has a long career ahead of him, so we will invest the necessary time and take our guidance from medical experts. We’re putting no pressure on him to return before he’s 100 percent ready.”

Bowman’s No. 48 Nascar Chevy team faces elimination from the Cup Series Playoffs in his absence. While the team will accrue points with Gragson behind the wheel, the No. 48 Camaro’s lackluster performance at Talladega has put them in a must-win situation.

It’s worth noting that Cody Ware, driver of the No. 51 Ford Mustang, will also miss Charlotte due to an ankle injury sustained at Texas. Additionally, Kurt Busch, driver of the No. 45 Toyota TRD Camry, suffered an impact similar to Bowman’s back in July, and has not yet returned to racing due to his concussion.
