Leaking Chevy Equinox Taillights May Cause Dead Battery, Engine Start Issues

Some Chevy Equinox owners may experience a range of electrical issues as a result of a water leak in the crossover’s taillights. These issues may be present in 2018 through 2023 model years of the Chevy Equinox.

Per a recent report from GM TechLink, a damaged Chevy Equinox right-side taillight lens or housing may allow moisture to migrate through the bulb connector wire strands to the X350 connector, X320 connector, or Body Control Module (BCM). Water intrusion may result in corrosion, which could lead to a no start or extended crank condition, a dead battery, a fuel pump that runs when the ignition is turned off, or the display of a Service Safety Restraints message on the Driver Information Center (DIC). Additionally, Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) P12A6 (Fuel Pump Driver Control Module Enable Circuit Performance) or DTC B0073 (Passenger Seat Belt Switch Circuit) may also be triggered.

If these conditions are found, it’s recommended that the Chevy Equinox taillight bulb connectors are inspected for signs of corrosion or water intrusion. If corroded, the taillight and bulb connector should be replaced.

In the event that DTC P12A6 was triggered, connector X350 (Fuel Tank Harness to Body Harness) should be checked for corrosion. It’s possible that water damage may short the terminals, resulting in the fuel pump running when the ignition is turned off, draining the battery and resulting in a no start or extended crank condition. If water damage is discovered, replace the damaged connector with terminated leads on the body harness side. The fuel pump control module harness may need to be replaced as well.

For units of the Chevy Equinox with DTC B0073 triggered, or if a Service Safety Restraints message is displayed on the DIC, check connector X320 (Right Front Seat Harness to Body Harness) for corrosion or water damage. Ensure that the SIR system is disabled prior to inspecting. If water damage is discovered, also check the BCM connector for water intrusion. If water intrusion or corrosion is discovered, it’s recommended that dielectric grease is applied to the connector and that the diagnosis is continued as appropriate. The problem is a lot of readers only read the bold print of the headlines and not the full article JONATHAN LOPEZ should change his headlines to IF YOU DAMAGE YOUR RIGHT REAR TAILLIGHT ON YOUR EQUINOX IT MAY LEAK WATER AND CAUSE AN ELECTRICAL ISSUE then maybe people won’t blame GM for there inability to comprehend the article.

  7. Tail light does not have to be damaged to leak. Ours has water in the housing a couple of times after heave rains. Had to remove unit to drain the water. Dealer didn’t find the problem 2 times when they look at it. Glad we live in Arizona.
