GM unveiled the all-new 2024 GMC Sierra EV a few weeks ago, pulling the sheets on a fully electrified variant of the popular pickup. Notably, the GMC Sierra EV front fascia incorporates an interesting new design with a unique lighting treatment, and now, GM Authority is taking a closer look.
The first thing to grab us about the 2024 GMC Sierra EV’s front end are the large L-shaped lighting signatures seen bracketing the grille around the top corners of the fascia. The L-shaped signatures incorporate three horizontal strakes along the bottom portion of the design.
Critically, these lighting elements are not the headlamps. Rather, they serve as the daytime runnings lights and lighting signatures, and they’re animated as well, displaying a lighting animation in conjunction with the turn signals, walk-up, and lock-up features.

So then, where are the 2024 GMC Sierra EV headlamps? Right below the L-shaped lighting signatures. Looking at the bumper, we see a set of squared, forward-facing lighting elements with a two-tiered layout mounted in line with the downward slope of the upper L-shaped signatures. Below these squared lighting elements are smaller fog lamps.
GM Authority spoke with GMC Sierra EV Chief Engineer Nicole Kraatz about the decision to mount the 2024 GMC Sierra EV headlamps lower in the bumper:
“The high beam and low beams are a little bit lower. We did this for a specific reason – to make it less obtrusive to oncoming traffic in terms of glare,” Kraatz told GM Authority.
“The headlights also perform a little bit better being low like that too,” Kraatz added.
The first 2024 GMC Sierra EV model revealed thus far is the Denali Edition 1, which is offered as the range-topper of the lineup. Additional GMC Sierra EV trim levels will be revealed at at later date. Specs include peak output of 754 horsepower and 785 pound-feet of torque, which propels the truck to 60 mph in less than 4.5 seconds, with max range-per-charge estimated at 400 miles. Under the skin is the GM BT1 platform, with GM Ultium batteries and GM Ultium drive motors for motivation.
Production of the 2024 GMC Sierra EV Denali Edition 1 will take place at the GM Factory Zero plant in Michigan, with future models produced at GM’s Lake Orion plant in Michigan. Look for a model launch early in 2024 calendar year.

Fellow road users will appreciate this engineering decision. Less oncoming glare and better headlamp performance is a good thing. They managed to integrate it really well on this design. Thanks GM.
I think this is a good idea… However the Jeep Cherokee anf Hyundai I forget which CUV it is have those headlights in the middle of the bumper and I drive a 2010 Chevy equinox and those headlights blind the hell out of me… Hopefully GMC did a better job.
My new Blazer has the lower mounted headlights, and they work well. I’m not sure about the glare issue to oncoming drivers.
All SUV’s and especially trucks should do this. It is simple geometry, the lower the headlights the further they are allowed to throw light down the road without blinding oncoming traffic, so both users win. May not be the most attractive but is by far the most useful style with how bright headlights are these days and how tall vehicles are getting.
