GMC Sierra HD OnStar And Connected Services Plan Now Standard Except On Pro Trim

The GMC Sierra HD is one of several GMC and Buick models that include three years of OnStar and Connected Services as a “forced option.” Now, OnStar and Connected Services have been moved over to the standard feature list, but interestingly, it remains optional for the GMC Sierra HD Pro trim level.
For those readers who may be a bit lost, we’ll briefly recap the news thus far. Back in July, GM Authority reported that all new 2022-model-year and 2023-model-year GMC and Buick models would be equipped with a three-year OnStar and Connected Services plan. Tagged with RPO code R9M, the addition of this feature could be considered a “forced option” in that it would be included as standard, despite it technically being optional. The cost of the plan, which ranges between $905 and $1,675, would eventually be integrated into the vehicle MSRP, but initially, online configurators showed the plan price added on top of MSRP.
The GMC Sierra HD is one of those vehicles affected by this strategy. Now, the three-year OnStar and Connected Services plan has been integrated into the GMC Sierra HD standard feature list for all trim levels, with one exception – the GMC Sierra HD Pro, which continues to offer the feature as optional.
As such, the MSRP for the 2023 GMC Sierra 2500HD starts at $42,995, while the MSRP for the 2023 GMC Sierra 3500HD starts at $44,195.

Additionally, the light-duty GMC Sierra 1500 also includes the three-year OnStar and Connected Services plan as standard, with the exception of the Sierra 1500 Pro trim level.
Following GM Authority’s report on the inclusion of the three-year OnStar and Connected Services plan as a “forced option,” a number of GM Authority readers posted comments conveying their disagreement with the strategy. Among the reasons given were that smartphones already provided the sort of connected apps and features offered, thus making the plan more or less redundant.

Only after I bought my ‘22 GMC Sierra Denali Ultimate did I realize that this truck with MSRP edging in on $100K (CDN) does not actually have a navigation system without paying a monthly subscription fee to OnStar for a data plan. And, to get 3GB of data per month, they want $20? But don’t worry, you can get 11gb for only $70/month – are you kidding me? I can’t get rid of this thing fast enough. It’s not the money – it’s the principle (and the way GM just kind of hides it. They tell you it has Super Cruise and includes 3 years of “connected services”. However, they don’t tell you that “connected services “ doesn’t include the connection required to use your Nav system. Of course you can use Apple CarPlay or android auto – which works, most of the time but without the onboard system, you get this annoying message that says “you need offline maps” and when that message appears, you’re usually driving and you can’t make it go away quickly because “this function isn’t available while vehicle is in motion”. It’s ridiculous.

One: You’re in Canada and you don’t know that the country has the most expensive wireless data in the world? It’s not GM’s fault.
Two: You can connect the system to Wi-Fi at home and download offline maps. Search the Google article “Use Google Maps built into your car when offline”. This is better than the old method where you had to pay $100 (US) a year for a new SD card if you wanted updated maps.
The message is telling you you’re doing it wrong. Instead of ignoring the message, follow its instructions because it will fix the problem.
Three: You can tether the thing via Wi-Fi to your phone’s hotspot.
China owns 50% of GM now in China.
As China owns a big chunk of ANY company doing business in China. This goes for the other vehicle makers, tech, etc.
What this article failed to mention was the price increase a couple of weeks ago, to cover this bogus action.
Ridiculous subheading GMA, “Don’t want to pay for it? Get the Pro.” The objection to mandatory connected services is not coming from the “Pro” buyers (mostly fleet who would immediately flip to Ford or Dodge). GM is pushing the line of what consumers will put up with for mandatory “options” because supply is depressed and the vehicles are otherwise desirable.
The objection is because buyers don’t want it for a number of different reasons. No need to parse this endlessly – people who are complaining (me) don’t want it. Can I afford it? Yes. I can also afford options that some desire and choose but I don’t want. The choice is no longer “do I want connected services” but am I willing to put up with mandatory connected services in order to have the vehicle of shop elsewhere. GMC can get away with this now because demand is high and supply is tight.
I was lucky that my 22 refreshed was bought BEFORE all this “mandatory” crap. What happens if the owner pays the “mandatory” price then sells after 1 year or the vehicle gets stolen or written off. Who gets the REFUND. OPTIONS are supposed to be just that. The customer gets the right to configure the vehicle the wat they want. GOODBYE GM

I have had a GMC and a Buick parked in my garage for the past 40+ years. I did not have OnStar active on either vehicle because I did not want or need it. Will I be replacing my current GMC and Buick with another GMC and Buick, NOT AS LONG AS ONSTAR IS included AS A MANDATORY OPTION!!!
Don’t worry, before long it will be simply added into the base price and nos customers won’t realize that they are paying for it. I just ordered a 2023 Sierra 1500, and am thankful that Sam brought it to our attention that we can download Google Maps Offline so I won’t have to keep buying a monthly subscription. I’m not too tech-savvy, but have grandkids 11 years old and up, so I can get them to set me up.

Hey Mary… CEO of GM. “ARE YOU LISTENING”? You better get your head outta your A$$ before it is to late. But than again, why should you care, you have a contract that states if you get booted, you still get millions…. Your running the company into the ground, losing decades long customers. Stop listening to your team who keep telling you everything is just fine, because they know if you find out the truth, they will be fired. Get out there on the streets MARY and get the real world answer about what people think of the “NEW GM”… most will tell you it su*ks.
Just picked up a diesel Sierra 2500 that was ordered in May specifically WITHOUT navigation. Not only did we have to pay for the price increase but we got navigation and had to pay for the onstar, another1500 bucks. The kicker was the dealership didn’t even tell us. I picked it out of the paperwork.
My husband worked 35 at GM Truck and Bus so we have been GM loyal for 45 years. Not anymore. Done with this crap.
