General Motors is opening a new GM Advanced Design studio in England in 2023.
Upon requesting more information about the facility, a GM spokesperson told GM Authority that there aren’t many details to share at this point, and that the design team is focusing on meeting their hiring needs and will release photos and more information when the studio opens in 2023.
Called GM Advanced Design Europe, the studio will join the global network of Advanced Design Centers in Michigan, California, and Shanghai. These teams are tasked with looking out at the future of design, spotting trends and capitalizing on opportunities, as well as maintaining a long-term view on consumer trends. Some examples include the Cadillac Halo Portfolio Concepts, the BrightDrop Trace Grocery, BrightDrop Zevo 600, and the Cruise Origin, which were all developed by one of GM’s advanced design teams.
It’s no secret that GM is looking to be the undisputed global leader when it comes to electric vehicles. As the GM spokesperson tells us, doing that will require the company to follow trends and find talent from across the globe. To that end, GM felt that Europe is a good place to provide the opportunity to grow and attract talent. In addition, Europe has a healthy amount of competition in the design field, and – as a result – a good amount of talent.
Heading the studio will be former Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) design boss, Julian Thomson, who has extensive experience and knowledge of the European design community, having worked at JLR for over a decade and at Volkswagen and Lotus before that. Thomson has admitted that he has been studying GM’s product line for some time now, and has shown interests in recent Cadillac models as well as C8 Corvette.
He also stated that the English design studio won’t only be “Europeanizing” existing GM models, but will instead be working with the other Advanced Design studios in real-time. GM’s upcoming England design studio is currently hiring for a variety of positions.
GM famously withdrew from Europe roughly five years ago after selling its Opel-Vauxhall division to PSA Groupe, owner of Peugeot-Citroen. PSA Groupe has since merged with Fiat-Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) to form the Stellantis conglomerate, leaving GM with no major presence in Europe’s mainstream vehicle segments.

Another one in England… why not here in Wedel… ? It would be great in HH West to have a car company
Recommend Tinsdaler Weg 183, the big building is empty in a beautiful area, just an easy refit, it is ok
I thought it was Barbra or are there two woman destroying GM.
At this rate there won’t be any customers to design for!!!
After I get my Camaro (after a year on order GM still haven’t built it) I will not be buying a GM because I’m not going to buy an electric car and I live in California!!!!!

You don’t understand that? Reading comprehension is very important.
Surprised it’s not in China.
The question is ‘why’ ? England is not the hotbed of car design. Someone in the upper echelon at GM must want to live in England. Another mgmt. poor choice leading to a final bankruptcy.
There is a motor valley in the ATM, Jaguar and Lotus area – they set over there.
Good choice after USA and Shanghai.
EU style is followed by the rest of the world, people came here to be “contaminated”.
