Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)

Chevy Camaro sales during the third quarter of 2022 kept the Bow Tie’s muscle car in third place. However, the performance during the quarter represents the model’s best quarterly result so far this year, while also coming close to topping its best segment share.

The Dodge Challenger remained in first place since last quarter with an 17 percent increase in sales to 16,412 units. The Ford Mustang (see running Mustang sales numbers) remained in second with a 14 percent bump to 10,354 units, while the Camaro posted a 52 percent jump to 7,922 units.

From a segment share standpoint, the Camaro held a 23 percent share, up a healthy five percentage points, and only bested by its Q4 2021 share of 24 percent. The Challenger posted a 47 percent share, down two percentage points, followed by the Mustang with a 30 percent share, also down two percentage points.

The two-door muscle car segment grew a noteworthy 23 percent percent to 34,688 units during Q3 2022, meaning Camaro sales still significantly outperformed the segment average.

For reference, we are providing sales results for the expanded mainstream two-door sports car segment below.

The mainstream two-door sports car segment grew an even more impressive 30 percent to 40,844 units during Q3 2022, meaning Camaro sales also outperformed the segment average in this expanded segment as well.

The GM Authority Take

The impressive jump in Chevy Camaro sales during the third quarter of 2022 was the result of better availability of the muscle car, which is available in Coupe and Convertible body styles, at the dealer level thanks to improvements in production at the GM Lansing Grand River plant in Michigan. However, the Camaro still lags behind the Challenger and Mustang, which has been the case for several years now since the current sixth generation model debuted for the 2016 model year. Late last year, GM Authority provided an in-depth analysis about what went wrong with this sixth-gen model.

The Camaro is on its last legs, slated to be sunset in 2023, with the final model year set to receive a commemorative heritage special edition. However, two of the Detroit Big Three have plans to keep their muscle cars alive.

A teaser of the upcoming Dodge EV muscle car

In July of last year, Stellantis teased an electric Dodge muscle car planned for 2024, though it’s currently unclear if it will end up being the four-door Dodge Charger, Challenger, or a new nameplate altogether. A Dodge spokesperson said that it wouldn’t sell “electric cars,” but “American eMuscle.”

Next-generation, 2024 Ford Mustang

Just last month The Blue Oval revealed the next-generation 2024 Ford Mustang. Though it uses the outgoing Mustang’s general architecture, all visible components were reworked. To that end, this generation will likely be the last Mustang with an internal combustion engine.

Meanwhile, the 2023 Chevy Camaro soldiers on as the eighth model year for the current, sixth generation model, introducing several important changes compared to the 2022 model, including the deletion of various dealer-installed options, optional Camaro ZL1 1LE Spec Visible Carbon Fiber Spoiler, and optional Sport Pedals Kit. However, the 2023 Camaro adds two new 20-inch wheel options.

As a reminder, the Chevy Camaro engine lineup is comprised of four powertrain options, including the turbocharged 2.0L I4 LTG gasoline engine, naturally aspirated 3.6L V6 LGX gasoline engine, naturally aspirated 6.2L V8 LT1 gasoline engine, and supercharged 6.2L V8 LT4 gasoline engine found in the ZL1. These engines are mated to the following transmissions, depending on engine and trim level: 6-speed manual standard on all models, 8-speed automatic available on LS and LT models, and 10-speed automatic available on LT1, SS and ZL1 models. Under the skin is the GM Alpha platform.

Production of the 2023 Chevy Camaro started at the GM Lansing Grand River plant in Michigan on June 17th, 2022. The online configurator tool is now live for the 2023 Camaro.

While the two-door muscle and sports car segments showed solid growth during Q3 2022, customer interest has been trending toward utilities (crossovers and SUVs) and pickups. At the same time, the recent electric vehicle push has also reduced demand for vehicles like the Camaro, as EVs are (somewhat ironically) often capable of higher levels of performance than their gasoline-powered counterparts. Moreover, ever-rising fuel prices have driven new car buyers to seek more practical and fuel-efficient alternatives.

To that end, Chevy is bringing back a Super Sport model with the first-ever 2024 Chevy Blazer EV SS, a performance crossover that the marque proclaims has the “soul of a true sports car” and capabilities that “will surprise and delight” diehard Bow Tie brand fans.

2024 Chevy Blazer EV SS

Chevy says the upcoming Blazer EV SS has “design and engineering developed to live up to the legacy of the iconic Super Sport performance designation” that it wears on its exterior. A standard performance AWD propulsion configuration delivers up to 557 horsepower and 648 pound-feet of torque in the crossover, enabling a zero to 60 mph time of under four seconds in the Wide Open Watts (WOW) acceleration setting. The driving range of the Blazer EV SS is estimated at 290 miles, thanks to the largest available battery pack, while certain other Blazer EV configurations offer up to 320 miles of estimated range. Additional performance-focused features include a specific sport-tuned chassis and Brembo front brakes.

As such, it would seem that Chevy performance is here to stay, but it’s taking on new forms in the electric vehicle revolution.
