Buick Encore GX Avenir Incoming: Exclusive

First hitting the scene for the 2020 model year, the Buick Encore GX crossover is set to receive a mid-cycle refresh for the upcoming 2024 model year. Critically, GM Authority has exclusively learned that the refreshed 2024 Buick Encore GX will introduce a new range-topping trim level, specifically a new Encore GX Avenir variant.

According to sources familiar with the matter, the new 2024 Buick Encore GX Avenir will incorporate a number of unique exterior styling features to help it stand apart from the rest of the trim level lineup, including a new premium grille treatment, as well as a set of 18-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels. Additionally, the cabin space will justify the model’s range-topping positioning with upgraded leather seating, as well as the inclusion of some of the optional equipment offered with the current range-topping Buick Encore GX Essence trim level, such as (relevant RPO codes listed in parentheses):

GM Authority reached out to General Motors for confirmation of the upcoming Buick Encore GX Avenir trim level. In response, a Buick spokesperson provided the following statement:

“Avenir represents the highest expression of Buick luxury. Since the introduction of the Avenir sub-brand, more Buick customers have opted for our higher end trims than ever before. We are continually listening to customer feedback and looking at opportunities to expand the Avenir sub-brand, but we have no specific announcements to make at this time.”

As a reminder, the current Buick Encore GX offers two engine options, including the turbocharged 1.2L I3 LIH gasoline engine, rated at 137 horsepower and 162 pound-feet of torque, and the turbocharged 1.3L I3 L3T gasoline engine, rated at 155 horsepower and 174 pound-feet of torque. Under the body panels, the Buick Encore GX rides on the GM VSS-F vehicle set, while production for the North American market takes place at the GM Bupyeong plant in South Korea.

  1. The gray Buick Encore GX pictured above already looks very elegant (and shiny), so I’m hopeful that an Avenir trim will add to its appeal even more! For what it’s worth, in their most recent Future Product Pipeline, Automotive News says that the last year of the Encore GX will be 2025, then, presumably, it will be replaced by a similar-sized Electra.

  2. This is great. The Avenir trim makes the Buick’s all that much nicer and what they deserve.

    Now, give us an EV sedan and/or coupe and offer it with Avenir trim too!

  4. Too bad the original Buick Encore, now gone, never offered an Avenir trim. I love the idea of an Encore GX Avenir. But, as ever, the Encore GX’s three-cylinder engines are a sore point. From what I’ve read, the 1.2L and 1.3L inline-threes are decently quick, thanks to turbocharging. But they vibrate so much, at low speeds and at idle, that the car feels about to shake itself to bits. To my mind, the three-cylinder configuration has “Geo Metro” written all over it, even though today’s inline-threes are light-years ahead of the wretched little lump that first turned up in the 1985 Chevrolet Sprint and was later used in the Geo Metro. I wish they would swap out the inline-three for an inline-four in the Encore GX. I doubt that will happen, though.

    1. Chris VL: Where have you read this about the 3 cyl? I’d be interested in reading that, because I’ve not seen anything too negative about those engines. Because this is no longer the 70’s, I highly doubt Buick (GM) would not address something like this immediately.

  5. I really hope this happens! I love my current Encore GX, but wish that it had more. I currently own the Essence trim, and I know that I can still get more options than what I have. However, cooled seats, all LED lighting inside and out, and maybe a couple of extra drive modes would be really nice. If Buick does bring the Avenir trim level to the GX, I’ll sign up for it

  6. I have a 2020 Encore GX Select Sport Touring that I love so cannot wait to see the Avenir trim. Have the 1.3 ltr turbo and the engine does not vibrate and has plenty of pick up. {38,000 miles} I was skeptical at first about this engine but after a test drive and now owning it for 2 and half years love it plus the average of 32 M.P.G. Only complaint and I have and have read this is that the front seats could be a little bit bigger otherwise love the ride. So yes, sign me up for when the Avenir model comes out

  9. Does anyone honestly think these little 3 cylinder motors are going to 200,000 miles?

    1. Agreed, have done some research on this engine, to make it to say 200K miles the preventative maintenance beyond normal will be needed. Motor Oil, I’d use the Mobile One Full Synthetic, Coolant the Prestone II ready to use, additionally keeping the coolant level in the Turbo checked and full will be paramount. Now, changing your driving style will be a given. Or to put it another way … don’t drive it like you stole it. If the speed limit on the interstate says 65 or 70 miles per hour … drive 65 or 70, not 80 to 85. I’m driving a ’13 C-Max Hybrid we bought new and a ’09 Escape bought new, no oil/collant issues due to the fact that with the exception of the Turbo (not on a ’13 C-Max or Escape) the smaller engines have done great. Now, if you drive like a idiot, speed, no regular type of maintenance … you’re asking for trouble. The American driver has got to change their ways of operating a vehicle, this isn’t a will ya … it’s a you will, or you’ll pay the price with monster repair bills if you don’t.
