2011 And 2012 GMC Sierra Recalled For Airbag Inflator Rupture Risk

General Motors has recalled certain examples of the 2011 GMC Sierra 1500 and 2012 GMC Sierra 1500 over an issue related to defective airbag modules. Affected units may be equipped with a defective airbag inflator that may pose a safety risk.

The problem: affected vehicles may be equipped with a front driver airbag module that includes an airbag inflator built with a supplier-manufacturing defect. Defective inflators may rupture when deploying the airbag. If an inflator does rupture when deployed, it may result in metal fragments passing into the vehicle cabin.

The hazards: a ruptured inflator can pose a serious safety risk to passengers, as metal fragments that pass into the cabin could result in injury or death.

The fix: to address this issue, dealers are instructed to inspect the front-driver airbag module on recalled vehicles and replace it if necessary.

Affected components: front-driver airbag modules produced as service replacements.

Affected vehicles:

  • 2011 GMC Sierra 1500
  • 2012 GMC Sierra 1500

Number of affected vehicles: it’s unknown at this time how many units of the 2011 GMC Sierra 1500 and 2012 GMC Sierra 1500 are affected by this recall.

Owners should: GM will notify customers affected by this safety recall, and will provide instructions on what to do next. Some of the defective part purchasers include body shops, independent repair shops, and third-party automotive repair or distribution businesses, all of which will be notified as well. GMC customers can also visit my.gm.com/recalls and use their VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) to view any open recalls or other actions currently active for their specific vehicle. Unsold vehicles affected by this recall will be placed on a stop-sale order until repairs are performed. 1. No, it’s Autoliv this time. I think these trucks only have Takata on the passenger side.
