GM has issued a recall for certain examples of the 2011 through 2012 Chevy Tahoe and Chevy Suburban SUVs. Affected units may be equipped with a defective airbag inflator that could rupture when deploying the airbag, resulting in metal fragments entering the cabin.
The problem: affected SUVs may be equipped with a front driver airbag module and inflator built with a supplier-manufacturing defect. The defect could result in the inflator rupturing when deployed. This rupture could result in metal fragments passing into the cabin.
The hazards: a ruptured inflator could pose a serious safety risk if it passes metal fragments into the cabin. If a ruptured inflator sends metal into the cabin, it may result in injury or death.
The fix: dealers are advised to inspect the front-driver airbag module on affected vehicles and replace it if necessary.
Affected components: front-driver airbag modules produced for use as a service replacement.
Affected vehicles:
- 2011 Chevy Tahoe
- 2012 Chevy Tahoe
- 2011 Chevy Suburban
- 2012 Chevy Suburban
Number of affected vehicles: it’s unknown at this time the number of Chevy Tahoe and Chevy Suburban units affected by this recall.
Owners should: GM will notify Chevy Tahoe and Chevy Suburban customers affected by this recall and provide instructions on how to proceed. Some of the defective part purchasers include body shops, independent repair shops, and other third-party automotive repair or distribution businesses, which will also be notified. Unsold vehicles affected by this recall will be placed on a stop-sale order until the necessary repairs are completed. Gosh, can’t the vendor get it right? Airbags are going on a couple of decades.
Maybe next they can fix their cheap suspension and steering components. Every person I know with this bodystyle has had to replace the suspension waaay earlier than normal. Just cheap crap. I’ve come to expect this from Nissan, Mitsubishi and Hyundai/Kia, but not on Chevy trucks. They used to be the easiest to recommend, now you gotta worry about the crap engines (thanks AFM), crap suspension, and crap transmissions aside from the usual cheap plastics and mediocre build quality.
