In late 2021, GM rival, Toyota, announced its electric vehicle strategy, laying out its plans to introduce 30 new battery electric vehicles across its Toyota and Lexus brands by 2030. The Japanese automaker did not, however, indicate when it hoped to achieve full electrification of its lineup. The strategy is notably more conservative than that of General Motors, which earned the Japanese automaker criticism from outlets like Public Citizen, which believes that Toyota’s EV plans are simply not aggressive enough.
The publication called out Toyota on September 13th, urging it to completely phase out its internal combustion engine (ICE), hybrid and plug-in hybrid vehicles by 2030.
“A safe future depends on urgent action from companies like Toyota,” said East Peterson-Trujillo, clean vehicles campaigner with Public Citizen. “As the world’s largest auto manufacturer, Toyota must play a leadership role in putting electric cars on the road. If Toyota is going to begin building for our future, it will need to fully electrify its line-up.”
Ideally, the publication would like Toyota to phase out ICE vehicles of all varieties by 2030, align its global advocacy and lobbying with the goal of phasing out gasoline-powered cars by the end of the decade while supporting renewable energy policies, and ensuring that its supply chain relies entirely on renewable energy by 2035.
Comparatively, GM plans to launch 30 new EVs worldwide by 2025, a half decade earlier than Toyota’s plans to do the same. These 30 new EV offerings will include Cadillac, GMC, Chevrolet and Buick products. GM said it will also encompass EVs “at all price points,” and for various lifestyles and use cases including work, adventure, performance and family. More than 40 percent of GM’s U.S. portfolio will be battery-powered by the end of 2025.
Additionally, Cadillac will go all-electric by 2030, spearheading The General’s foray into full electrification, followed closely by sister brand Buick, which plans to launch its first EV in 2024 before going full EV by 2023.

This entity Public Citizen can go blow it out their backside.
Amen to that. Some automaker on the planet needs to be realistic.
Toyota are so wie so ugly cars, who cars now… before the toyota camry was nice design, today all toyota strangers, so do not care which motor they have ,,, more ugly in lexus and infinity is impossible… so who cares, once in 2004 a japanese put in doubt my styling abilities in toyota brussels, now see how horrible they are… really do not care … what hell they are doing.
Toyota is just more realistic
Exactly. I could write an essay with how many issues there are with this complete phase-out of ICE vehicles, especially if it’s by 2030. I work for an electrical utility, and I can tell you every grid in north america will need to be substantially reinforced and expanded to handle that volume of EVs, which takes a LOT of time and money. As we are seeing in Europe, we can’t just shut down all of the reliable baseload sources (mostly talking about natural gas and nuclear) AND push for faster EV adoption. Anyone thinks this can happen in this timeframe without energy poverty are living in another reality.
When GM announces it last generation of ICE trucks (maybe that will never happen, who knows) I will be buying that last gen and making it last as long as possible.
It’s all about the flavor of the times and YES, politics drive all this BS.
Our Son is a Journeyman, Licensed Electrician and has been installing these high Amperage EV chargers in wealthy people’s homes that had bought an EV to keep up with the Joneses and to have “the latest thing” ! Extremely expensive to install and since the wealthy seem to live near one another in many places, the local Utility has begun denying permits for these chargers if too many of them are located close enough to overwhelm the local substation’s ability to provide that kind of power. It’s not common, yet, but he has had three denials so far and it seems that the more requests in a given area, the more denials.
Jordan, I am with you. Have you spent the last 35 years in the utility industry, mostly in power plants, I absolutely agree that the infrastructure as it is will not handle the load. There are still too many rural lines that are over 60 years old and can’t handle the extra power required. Not that there will be very many rural people buying electric cars anyway. I will be surprised if we see farmers driving electric tractors or combines, or electric pick up trucks to town on Friday night. This whole battery powered vehicle direction that the government is forcing people to take will not last. I agree with the poster who said that more efficient ICE vehicles are the answer. I will keep my 1500 diesel until it dies. If they decide to go all electric and do away with it, I will buy the last available one and keep it forever.
So being concerned for the environment is “America-hating” now?
You don’t have to be a tree hugger to care. Heck, you don’t even have to go buy an EV now if you don’t want to and you can still be environmentally friendly. Slow down. Consolidate trips. Drive the speed limit. Buy (ICE) more fuel efficient vehicles instead of jumping in that huge truck just to drive to work. Recycle as much as you can. Take shorter showers. I could go on, but my point should be clear.
But (constantly) coming on here and attempting to start fights with ridiculous comments that are politically slanted is getting old.
What is getting old are these companies pandering to every woke group that comes down the pike instead of concentrating on building the best product possible.
Public Citizen is absolutely a left leaning publication. Toyota is well aware, being a global brand, of the projected trajectory of electrics. They’ve invested more in hybrids and hydrogen, which are actually cleaner than electrics. In 10 years, we will be seeing more electrics being scrapped, clogging landfills and creating another well-intended mess from the ‘end of the world’ people.
Sure Michael. Keep telling yourself that. It’s wrong, but go with it.
OH ? And YOUR “Preaching” isn’t “politically slanted” ? Typical hypocrite ! Totally unaware that the frauds called EVs are far worse for the environment, all things considered, than pollution-controlled ICE vehicles ever hoped to be. You’re so dumb you’re actually advocating for more Coal burning power plants to produce the extra, non-existent electricity these Energy Hog frauds require. ” you don’t even have to go buy an EV NOW if you don’t want to”….but that’s what it is coming to…you won’t be able to. Must be a Biden-cultist and YOU, not Tigger, just started the fight.
billj598: Calm down before you give yourself a heart attack. IF you have read my comments before, you would see how wrong you are about what you just said. But go ahead and tell yourself more lies. I bet you think J6 was a friendly time where people who love America were just touring the capital. And you probably believe the election was stolen. Bottom line? Go back and read my comments and then come back and let’s talk. Until then, back off.
Ah yes, yet another leftoid trying to tell someone to “calm down” because they responded negatively to his/her/its “preaching” and now trying hard to deflect from it. I couldn’t care less about your “comments before”, you self-identified with your telling everyone else how to think and how omnipotent you are in your lefty mind. You’re too far left to even admit that 98% of those involved in J6 were non-violent and were even invited into the Capitol Bldg. by the Cops. But I watched it live and have seen numerous videos to prove you wrong. And there you go with yet another silly, childish deflection….the hallmark of the extreme left DemocRAT cultist. “Back off ” ? STFU ! Where’s the mute button on this thing ? You’ve been outvoted and you’re gone !
Is this serious? And MEGA ?
I personally believe that this is overly aggressive and 2030 is not realistic. Even 2035 will be pushing things a lot and they must begin fixing/building the proper infrastructure now. But that doesn’t mean we need to just keep coasting like we have been. It’s not sustainable and/or safe. We don’t need to become tree huggers or all start wearing clothing made from hemp! But if we don’t change our ways and instead keep acting/living like this planet if fine, then none of this will matter. ICE or EV will become irrelevant.
I just don’t get the mentality (especially on this site) of it all one way or nothing with zero in the middle. Weather it’s Toyota or GM or Ford. 2030 is too fast and they need to offer buyers what will work with even better efficiency and cleaner burning until the full EV can realistically be done. And then, they need to do it completely with renewable energy.
Dan, please reread the piece at the top of the page. GM authority solicited the opinion of East Peterson-Trujillo, clean vehicles campaigner with Public Citizen. Come to think of it, what credentials does someone need in order to become a clean vehicles campaigner?
Nonetheless, we’ve seen so much efficiency growth in the last few years, and we need to be realistic about the industrial segment of our society. None of that heavy equipment can operate on electric power. We need to find a balanced approach, not the aggressive plan that states like California are implementing.
If you see news articles from May 6, 2022 that talk about how California went completely sustainable that day, even the ABC News article mentioned that 10% of the power was generated by natural gas which is not considered a renewable. The interesting fact was that the event occurred for only a few minutes during the sunniest part of the day when people were at work and there was a very low draw on the power grid. Notable for sure, but not significant. The events included the grid that excluded the city of Los Angeles. That’s the significant fact.
We need to find a way to stay competitive in a global economy otherwise we will all be learning Mandarin. Finding a balanced approach is the forward.
To all those people and organizations that believe EV’s will save the planet, I have one question for you:
Do electric power plants (that power up your beloved EV’s) generate electricity with electricity?? Think about that for a minute…
Tim:
Renewable and/or clean energy. You are thinking way old school and the earth can’t continue on it’s current path with thinking like that.
A little too bossy for my tastes. Advocacy groups always have an angle, and Public Citizen is doing this for the PR to “shame” Toyota into making a pledge. But why? If EVs are the future, then let Toyota get left in the dust. If it’s not the future, well, then we have a problem.
Most companies have tossed dates out but nothing is in concrete. You will see there has not been any announcement to the end of ICE at Chevy. They will sell two lines for a while as the market chooses.
Toyota is the smartest automaker in the business. Toyota like Ford is going to offer options, either IC or EV. Putting all your eggs in one basket in a new trendy thing can be risky. You have to offer options just like the lift truck or fork lift truck makers – electric, propane, gasoline, diesel. This whole mass electric EV thing we are entering uncharted waters with grid capacity, doing away with fossil fuels, road tax calculation, etc.
Toyota has been brilliant in their strategy and execution. Look at Corolla versus the Vega and Pinto.
David Alan Murray:
Agreed…. Toyota may realize that certain gov’ts are going to put excessive taxes on gasoline powered vehicles and is merely giving people an ‘electric option’ to avoid them…. No big deal to me.
For locales where ICE vehicles are welcomed, I’m sure TOYOTA will continue to offer a full complement of ICE vehicles for them.
Well Toyota, you fueled this hysteria with your Pruis. You do realize their ultimate goal is no oil or auto companies of any sort?
I would suggest that Public Citizen donate their profits to the rebuilding of America’s power grid. It would be the “right” thing for them to do………….. assuming they REALLY want the transition to electric vehicles to work?
Toyota sold 8.833 million vehicles world wide, more than double VW sales. Changing over to 100% to EV will be no easy task. All anti-ICE groups are doing no good for anyone other than their own feel good agenda. Eliminating ICE is only a small step to reverse climate change, not the only one. Of all these anti-ICE groups and people who support their agendas, how many of them hang their laundry outside and keep the AC off during 90 degree temperatures?
I think GM will be filing for bankruptcy in about 10 years, again. Putting the cart in front of the horse so definitively , will have dire consequences. I’ve got a ’54, ’17 and a ’19 and plan on driving all three until I drop. And I’m OK with that.
Toyota is one of the few actually investing in R&D for Hydrogen fueled vehicles. With the number of new advances in technology to separate Hydrogen from Water it requires far, far less Electrical power to accomplish that and one discovery actually uses a Catalytic process. Toyota is not as STUPID as this leftoid “Public Citizen” thing.
Good for Toyota. Why would any car manufacturer go all electric. Just makes common since to produce ICE Vehicles along with the electrics.
Watch Dr. Zhivago. And, look at history and what States (which are the elites) ultimately do to the people (by using an invention called ‘Government’ which is your envious neighbors, against you) before the State ultimately fails. Look at the Assyrian Empire, the Babylon Empire, the Roman Empire, the British Empire. I know some will say I am crazy because you are too lazy or egotistical to look at this history. Watch Dr. Zhivago. Woke virtue signalers should fly to China and India and see where the highest percentage of pollutions are created and then tell Xi Jinping and Narendra Modi that they must change or else the Woke will get mad. Tell me how well that works out for you. Full EVs are only a good solution for some limited environments in some circumstances. Be aware there have been at least 5 Great Ice Ages on this planet and tell me if the earth Globally Warmed due to cavemen having a few sticks in a fire, duh. Also, don’t speak about Carbon and try to fool people, it is Carbon Dioxide which is what people exhale and what plants depend on to survive with photosynthesis. Use your brain to find full stories and full truth, not your political opinions plus the warped ideas of the New York Times
You nailed it. The whole climate manufactured crisis is to enrich those that are in power. People don’t understand that unless the whole world is equally working to be a cleaner society, it’s like being a non-smoker in a car full of smokers and thinking that you will be breathing fresh air because you’re doing your part.
Again, the earth goes through warming and cooling phases just like seasons. Climate alarmists think that the equivalent of one person relocating the beach by scooping sand with a Dixie cup
“Those who forget history are condemned to repeat it”
Also, check out the book False Alarm by Bjorn Lomborg. Very eye-opening.
I say no too.
We have about 400 years worth of proven oil reserves. Why the rush for EVs.
Anyone who thinks that buying an EV will change the weather is just plain stupid. Not to mention the fact that electric power production and the existing distribution system cannot support huge numbers of EVs. Prime example is CA. It’s laughable that their policies can’t even keep the lights on at night, let alone having everyone plug their cars in after work. Folks better wake up before these political idiots take us all over the cliff. After 35 years working in nuclear power, I can guarantee that politics will cause an enormous energy crisis in our country.
Let’s put EV’s on the ballot and see what happens.
Who Cares ??
SCREW “Public Citizen”. They need to stay in their lane.
This is why I love Toyota, man. I’m getting a last model year Camaro SS and then getting a RAV4. Perfect combination.
You know, people are realizing everything that goes into changing over to EVs from ICEs. For one thing, only home owners can own a EV. Apartments don’t have charging stations and it’s will be a long time before they do. Think about a 200 to 300 apartment complex installing a charger for every parking space in the apartments, and what that will cost, or even be feasible to do. Of course they’ll just add the cost in the already sky high rents. Since a lot of apartment dwellers are couples that have two cars and go in different directions to work. They’ll need two chargers for each apartment. Of course this mean completely overhauling all electric grids to ten times the capacity their at now.
Sorry SDW:
I happen to drive 3 plug-in cars, but then I like this type of vehicle..
Most people will not have MORE than 1 plug-in vehicle, which will probably be a plug-in hybrid – which needs NO ADDED INFRASTRUCTURE at all…
Even I realize that a Modern Society NEEDS oil refineries, and ICE vehicles will NEVER disappear. Electric car sales will grow, but will take decades to be the majority of sales, if ever.
Toyota isn’t a competitor against GM. Name the brands that Toyota has destroyed? GM went on an all-out brand killing rampage: Oldsmobile, Pontiac, Saturn, SAAB, Holden, Daewoo… GM even tried their hardest to Kill Opel and Lotus. GM KILLED THE ELECTRIC CAR EV1. There is zero competition between Toyota and Gruesome Murderer – GM.
I can’t believe the moderator hasn’t shut this political bs down!!
As I have stated here multiple times throughout the last couple of years, this is the Golden opportunity GM needs to overtake Honda and Nissan. If GM brings out proper BEV;s and from the likes of the Hummer, Lyriq, Silverado,, Nox, and Blazer it sure as hell seems that way, Toyota will be totally behind and Honda most likely in an even worse shape. Hell GM might just takeover Honda and they can do the Sedans and smaller vehicles for Chevrolet.
This is it….Bring the Thunder GM this is your Final opportunity.
Lets Gooooooooo!!!
GM won’t go 100% EV and they themselves have admitted so when stating that (to compete with FORD’s actions) Chevy will remain the division that will still sell ICE trucks…. If Chevy sells Silverados with ICE then so will GMC since they are the same.
Mary Barra (not particularly bright, from what I have seen) – since Market Share keeps dropping – sees Elon Musk tout nonsense about things he is going to do (think Hyper (Rust-O) Loop, Tesla Semi, hugely expensive new Roadster – none of which is currently for sale or even considered), and she is just copying him…
She at least is smart enough to realize that wild, unreachable predictions caused Elon Musk to be one of the richest men in the US, and she wants to be the richest woman.
Bill, the Tesla Roadster is available if you have the coin. My neighbor bought one of the 2020 released models. I think he paid something close to $150,000 for it which is far more than I would be willing to pay. Yes, it’s extremely quick (0-60 in 1.9 seconds, 0-100 in 4.2) and has reportedly spectacular range, but the price is far beyond the budgets of most people. Here in the Hawaiian islands where we live he only charges once a month but then, where can you go to drive it to it’s potential. Certainly not here. I’ve ridden in it and it’s fun, but not practical at all. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, I’ll just keep my 1500 diesel until it wears out.
Hyrolr:
Sorry, but you are thinking of the Tesla (model S) PLAID – which is just a silly take off on that Mel Brooks ‘Spaceballs movie’ : “Ludicrous Speed – Gone to Plaid”..
This is like a chevy SS – just a faster version of the plain old sedan…
I had the first Roadster – a rather late 2011 model for $109,000 plus tax… Zero options..
If you go to Tesla (dot) com, the only models listed for sale are the S, X, 3, and Y. No change in years… The NEW
Roadster (starting at well over $200,000) , Wedge Pickup (so called Cyber Truck), and Semi are STILL not for sale after being promised years ago… I had a bad enough experience with the first Roadster, (although I’m happy to have had the vehicle for 4 years), that it is unlikely I’ll purchase another Tesla..
Ultimately they are a poor value…. GM products for the most part, are good values. The 3 plug-ins I currently own are all GM’s for this reason. They are far from perfect vehicles – but then I don’t think anything else is.
Bill Howland:
Gosh, you have a gaggle of electrics. From our communications you must be a “Sparky”. Musk is now entering a commercial period of extreme do or flounder challenge. With the release of many EV’s by the players with deep resources, muscle and vendor relations ( GM, Ford, Stellantis ), the product by these players will feature applied advances over the Tesla products as you have commented. I’m sure GM went to a vendor for electric motor and control design since GM is not an electricity oriented company like Siemens, Phillips, Toshiba, GE, Emerson, etc. GM obtains the design from the vendor and then sets up assembly.. Like Musk did with Panasonic and their batteries and GM did with Life’s Good (LG) for their batteries.
Cummins as an IC engine maker went to Motorola for their electronic fuel system design to meet EPA standards. Caterpillar uses Mitsubishi for the electric propell system on their large mine haul trucks, and a vendor for their GPS autonomous control system. I’m sure Tesla uses an electric motor vendor.
Automakers today are pure assemblers of vendor made parts. The automakers are stampers of sheet metal and steel body fabrication. 90+% of the parts are now vendor designed and made.
Musk is now entering the days ahead real challenges.
David Allen Murray:
Well, I’m not the biggest fan of Mr. Musk, even though everyone it seems aspires to be like him (like Mary Barra).
Gm I’ll give credit for designing things in-house – I would suspect at least their motors are an in-house design – although heavily influenced by such companies as ABB. Inverters and Chargers might come from a company like Lear, or Magnum or any of a number of others…
Batteries are LG….or – with heavy input from the GM people at least from the manufacturing side of things….The Bolt Snafu they are probably not anxious to repeat so hopefully someone is double checking the ULTIUM battery output…
Not sure about Chrysler (Stellantis), but both FORD and GM have had notoriously bad infotainment systems for years… Be interesting to see how horrid the LYRIQ is – and most of the flat screens are already in a recall – so that sounds pretty awful actually in view of the foregoing… But we’ll see.
