GM No Longer Taking GMC Hummer EV Reservations

Offering a combination of cutting-edge technology, neck-snapping acceleration, and impressive off-road capability, the GMC Hummer EV is a hugely desirable vehicle. With that in mind, it should come as no surprise that GM just confirmed it is fully booked and no longer taking reservations for the GMC Hummer EV Pickup, or GMC Hummer EV SUV.

At present, GM is holding 90,000 reservations for the GMC Hummer EV, including reservations for both the Pickup and SUV body styles, per previous GM Authority coverage. Now, GM has confirmed to GM Authority that it is no longer taking reservations for its all-electric off-roader.

“GMC Hummer EV customers are excited about the off-road capability and incredible on-road performance their supertruck offers – all with zero-tailpipe-emissions,” GM said in a statement. “This enthusiastic interest has led to over 90,000 reservations for both Pickup and SUV, and we’re excited to say this incredible demand has led to Hummer EV reservations being fully booked at this time.”

GMC Hummer EV reservations have steadily increased this year, with GM revealing last April that it was holding roughly 70,000 reservations, and later disclosing in its Q2 2022 earnings report that it was holding 80,000 reservations.

Notably, it was estimated that of the 80,000 reservations announced with the Q2 2022 earnings report, 42 percent of reservation holders were new to GM. Additionally, 75 percent were new to the GMC brand, with the majority of customers residing in either California, Texas, or Florida. EV registrations are relatively low in Florida and Texas as compared to California, which indicates the GMC Hummer EV may be more popular in those regions without a significant number of EV registrations in the past.

GMC says that new units of the Hummer EV are being built and shipped daily, with reservations filled in the order in which they were received. The GMC Hummer EV is produced at the GM Factory Zero plant in Michigan, with production initially kicking off late last year. As of July, GM has produced 1,700 examples of the GMC Hummer EV Pickup. Production is set to ramp up through the second half of the 2022 calendar year.

As a reminder, the GMC Hummer EV features GM Ultium batteries and GM Ultium drive motors, while the GM BT1 platform provides the underpinnings.

  1. I’m shocked that GM even allowed 90,000 reservations. I wish them luck fulfilling the orders in a timely manner. Not a task I would want to be charged with right now in this industry.

    1. That’s the big question. How long will this backlog take to clear? 2 years? 5? 7? Wish I had the answer!

    2. These new Hummers are nothing but an obscene waste of resources. 9000 pounds? Seriously? My Sierra duromax weighs a bit over half that amount.

  2. It will be interesting to watch the rising price, and dwindling backlog.
    – I will be surprised if they build/sell half of that 90,000 before it is discontinued.
    – The rollout is going way too slow.

    1. This is reminiscent of the PT Cruiser launch when Chrysler had something that people wanted, but they didn’t have the ability to produce them fast enough, and it cost them 10’s of thousands of sales before the initial demand quickly fizzled. Except, this seems to be even a bigger delay and bigger miscalculation on being able to produce at all.

  3. So it’s completely sold out for its entire production run? I was interested in placing an order. Was.

    1. They will likely open the books again sometime 2024. Right now they are busy building out current orders.

  4. This $100k vehicle is “hugely popular” with a very small piece of the market. It is a novelty for the rich and will likely fade quickly. I hope GM doesn’t lose too much on their investment.

    1. Ageed. But the good thing is GM’s engineers have learned a lot building this thing. They went brute force with the battery and motor tech to achieve tree stump pulling power of the EV Hummer, sacrificing efficiency for raw voltage. Future high performance high torque truck EVs will be more efficient as the tech matures.

    2. Why would they lose too much? The design is going into the Silverado and Sierra EV’s. The Hummer EV is basically a slow ramp-up to those vehicles. If they can make it work on the Hummer than the other trucks are lighter, less powerful and more aerodynamic.

  5. I’m on the reservation list but won’t be buying. I’ve heard they expect like 40% follow through. That’s what a $100 refundable deposit leads to. Why won’t I get it? Too damn big. Bigger than I thought when I saw it.

    1. It’s smaller than a TRX or Raptor and shorter than a Silverado. Not sure what you were expecting, something the size of the Colorado?

      1. Wider than them all. Nearly 87 inches without the mirrors. 5 inches wider than Silverado. That’s why it has 3 windshield wipers. Won’t fit in garage with other car comfortably at all and since it’s an ev, that’s an issue.
