For informational and comparative purposes we also provide sales figures for crossover models that overlap with large three-row crossovers like the Traverse – either in price or seating capacity. These crossovers, which are generally smaller than the Traverse, are often cross-shopped with larger models like the Traverse, and include:

  • Midsize crossovers that offer three rows of seating, such as the GMC Acadia (see GMC Acadia sales), Kia Sorento, and Mitsubishi Outlander.
  • Midsize crossovers with two rows of seating sold at a similar price point to the Traverse, including Nissan Murano, Ford Edge, GM’s own Chevy Blazer, and Hyundai Santa Fe.
  • Midsize and full-size crossover models that are sold under the same name, but whose sales are not broken out by their respective automaker, like the Jeep Grand Cherokee. Specifically, Jeep parent company, Stellantis, does not individually report sales figures of the two-row Grand Cherokee vs. that of the three-row Grand Cherokee L since launching the overhauled models for the 2022 model year.

The mainstream large three-row crossover segment contracted 25 percent to 267,561 units in Q2 2022, meaning Chevy Traverse sales significantly underperformed the segment average.

The GM Authority Take

Chevy Traverse sales continue to be negatively impacted by inventory shortages stemming from production stoppages and delays. National supply of the full-size crossover was at just four days in May 2022, in March 2022, and in January 2022. Consequently, deliveries were less than half compared to a year ago.

Scarcity at dealer lots is the result of Traverse production being idled throughout parts of 2021 and 2022 at the GM Lansing Delta Township plant in Michigan due to various parts shortages, including but not limited to the global semiconductor microchip shortage. In July GM announced it will have its own family of microchips locked in by 2025 to address the microchip issue.

In addition, the automaker launched the refreshed 2022 Chevy Traverse this past fall as the fifth model year of the crossover’s second generation, updating the exterior and the interior. The refreshed model also features plenty of other changes, including revisions to its alloy wheel design, the addition of wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, standard LED headlights, GM’s Safety Alert Seat, and an automatic engine stop-start disable switch. Also, for 2022, the base L trim level was dropped, making LS the new base trim.

The 2023 Chevy Traverse has just arrived, largely unchanged from the recently overhauled 2022 model year, and the online configurator tool is now live.

The Bow Tie brand’s largest crossover continues to be recognized for its value. Most recently, the 2020 Chevy Traverse was listed as one of the best certified pre-owned three-row crossovers by Kelley Blue Book. Additionally, Consumer Reports hailed the 2022 Chevy Traverse as the easiest model to drive in the midsize three-row utility segment.

With the Chevy Traverse, The General has another winner on its hands. It just needs to build more to satisfy true market demand.

  6. Hey Mark… We own a 2019 Buick Enclave with 3.6 V6 engine for over two years now it’s been an excellent engine I also own a 2010 Chevy equinox ltz 3.0 V6 and it’s been very reliable 110,000 miles and running strong… Maybe if people did routine maintenance their cars would last longer I do tune ups, oil changes every three to four thousand miles and I check my oil I between oil changes. Not like that Junk Kia Telluride you ride I saw the other day it’s wasn’t even as old as our Enclave and the engine the V6 sounded like it was going to blow up. Please don’t be a troll.
