Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)
Buick Encore sales during the second quarter of 2022 place the Tri-Shield brand’s premium subcompact crossover in 16th place among 20 entries. The Honda HR-V remained in first, despite a 27 percent decrease in sales volume to 30,848 units, while the Jeep Compass placed second with a 54 percent growth to 21,927 units. The Hyundai Kona earned third with a 39 percent decline to 17,251 units, and the Encore’s corporate cousin from Chevy, the Chevy Trailblazer (see running Chevy Trailblazer sales), followed in fourth with a 32 percent slide to 15,938 units. The Encore’s other corporate cousin (and platform mate) from Chevy, the Chevy Trax (see running Chevy Trax sales), placed mid-pack at 10th with a 46 percent drop to 9,752 units. The Encore’s final corporate cousin in this segment, the Buick Encore GX (see running Buick Encore GX sales), placed 12th with a 65 percent drop to 9,089 units, and the Encore placed 16th with a 43 percent drop to 5,124 units.

The Kona posted an eight percent share, down one percentage point. Other GM models in the segment fared as follows: the Trailblazer posted a seven percent share, down one percentage point; the Trax held a four percent share, down two percentage points; and the Encore GX posted a four percent share, down five percentage points.
The four GM vehicles in the mainstream subcompact crossover segment – the Chevrolet Trax and Buick Encore, as well as their corporate cousins, the Chevrolet Trailblazer and Buick Encore GX – accounted for a cumulative 39,903 deliveries, good for 17 percent segment share. That puts The General in first or second place in the segment from an overall volume standpoint, depending on how we count tally the results (see Hyundai-Kia below).

Toyota’s newest model, the Corolla Cross, joined the mainstream B-crossover segment this year to most likely replace the C-HR, which has performed poorly from a sales volume standpoint. During the second quarter, Toyota saw a combined 16,983 sales of the C-HR and Corolla Cross, for a seven percent segment share.

However, a strong argument can be made that the Kia Soul is not part of the segment in question, but rather competes one segment below based on its size and price point. Removing the Soul from the Hyundai-Kia total nets 38,452 deliveries for a combined 18 percent segment share, placing the Hyundai-Kia conglomerate to second place just behind GM.

The mainstream subcompact crossover segment contracted 27 percent to 224,029 units during Q2 2022, meaning Encore sales significantly underperformed the segment average.
The GM Authority Take
Buick Encore sales moved the premium subcompact crossover up from near the bottom last quarter to 16th place this quarter. However, as GM Authority first reported, the Buick Encore will soon be discontinued, along with its mechanical relative, the Chevy Trax. Though GM will release an all-new Chevy Trax later this year, the same will not be the case for the Encore. In fact, GM has been scaling back production of Buick’s smallest and once highly-popular subcompact crossover to make more units of the Encore GX. That is on top of plans to build more EVs at the GM Spring Hill Production plant in Spring Hill, Tennessee, including one or more new electric Buick models.
In June, GM announced that Buick will offer a full-EV portfolio by 2030, with the first Buick electric vehicle slated to arrive in 2024 in North America. The automaker also unveiled the Buick Electra-X Concept in China as the brand’s first all-electric vehicle to feature Ultium battery and Ultium drive motor technology. The Buick Electra-X Concept debuts the design language of the Tri-Shield brand’s next-generation vehicles and represents a foretaste of its upcoming all-electric crossover.
Additionally, GM in June introduced the Buick Wildcat EV Concept as a design study that shows off the brand’s new design language intended for future electric Buick vehicles. In concert with those announcements, Buick unveiled its new brand identity alongside a new logo. The logo represents the first redesign in over three decades that continues to include the Tri-Shield layout, albeit an updated one.
Also joining the bevy of Buick announcements is the reveal of the all-new Buick Envista crossover in China this month. The coupe-like crossover demonstrates the Tri-Shield brand’s new Pure Design global philosophy that will be applied to all of its next-generation vehicles.
Prior to that, GM has been planning a new crossover in the form of the three-row Envision. The model has been revealed in China as the Buick Envision Plus, and the vehicle could come to market in North America as the Buick Envision GX.
While The General’s Tri-Shield marque is preparing for an all-electric future, Buick has more ICE-powered crossover models in the works.

GM once dominated this space and beat Hyandai not counting MVP Soul. How much of this is really about chips? Stellantis can get them for Compass so Trailblazer & Encore GX should be doable given this is a hot segment that builds consumer loyalty.
