2023 GMC Sierra AT4X AEV Edition: First Live Photos

The 2023 GMC Sierra introduces a number of important updates and changes over the preceding 2022 model year, including the introduction on the new GMC Sierra AT4X AEV Edition, a next-level off-roader boasting several components from American Expedition Vehicles (AEV). Now, we’re taking a closer look at the 2023 GMC Sierra AT4X AEV Edition with the first live photos.

GM unveiled the new 2023 GMC Sierra AT4X AEV Edition in July, framing it as the most off-road-capable factory GMC Sierra 1500 ever built. These latest photos, however, show the pickup as it stands in the real world. This particular example is a GM validation unit, and is covered in Onyx Black paint. To note, Onyx Black paint is available as an extra-charge color for an additional $495.

Standout equipment unique to the 2023 GMC Sierra AT4X AEV Edition include new bumper treatments, with an AEV stamped steel front and rear bumper added as standard. The front bumper also includes a provision for a winch, although we can’t make out whether or not this particular example is running a winch. Also notable items include heavy-duty recovery points in the bumpers.

Underneath the body, the 2023 GMC Sierra AT4X AEV Edition runs a set of five hot-stamped boron steel skid plates to protect the front approach, steering gear, transfer case, fuel tank, and rear differential. In the corners is a set of laser-engraved 18-inch AEV Salta wheels with a gloss black finish and recessed valve system, which are wrapped in chunky 33-inch Goodyear Wrangler Territory MT tires. The final production model will also offer off-road rocker protectors, which are not included with the validation model featured here.

In back, the unique rear bumper treatment is clearly visible, as is the AEV branding on the tailgate.

Under the hood, the 2023 GMC Sierra AT4X AEV Edition features the naturally aspirated 6.2L V8 L87 gasoline engine as standard. Output is rated at 420 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque, with the GM 10-speed automatic transmission on hand for the cog swaps.

Production of the 2023 GMC Sierra 1500 takes place at the GM Fort Wayne plant in Indiana, GM Oshawa plant in Canada, and GM Silao plant in Mexico. Under the skin, the light-duty pickup rides on the GM T1 platform.

  3. What should they do? Give you all your money back and give it to you for free when it is no longer under constraint? This is the best way to do something, owners get a credit and still get the item later, sometimes the credit is for half of the stand alone option. It is that, or they just sit on the lot for who know how long and you guys will complain about that too. They just can’t please them. Incase you have had your head under a rock look at all the supply chain, production issues and labor problems impacting them. Shipping is difficult to come by. So instead of just complaining do a little research and maybe you won’t be opening your mouth about something you have no idea about…

    2. Well said. These issues and lack of available transport, staffing, you name it, is impacting ALL industries globally, including the one I work in, athletic apparel and footwear. It’s been hell for the better part of two years, and there’s no light at the end of the tunnel yet.

  5. good looking truck. I honestly wish there was an option to buy the vehicle with custom wheel sizes etc beyond oem options. Always hate getting a truck and then buying my own wheel/tire setup and having to resell the tires/rims.

  6. THE problem with GMC,…… the bed size….cant get a bed larger than the small one….My chevy has a 61/2 ft bed and longer version is avail….3 bed sizes @ chevy…..only one at gmc……

    1. Clarify for me: GMC offers Long Bed or Standard Bed on Regular Cab, Standard Bed on Double, and Short or Standard on Crew….where does this differ from Chevy. Certain trim levels get locked to short crew – ie Denali Ultimate – which I assume was for the SuperCruise.

      1. You are correct. I have a 2022 AT4 Standard bed. AT4X is only available with the short bed.
No different than Trail Boss LT or ZR2 (short bed only)

  7. I really don’t understand, that whether it’s the AT4X or the Denali Ultimate. If you are the one willing to pay for it, then it should come with what ever bed size you want. Because they are still over charging for the quality of materials and the truck itself.
