2023 Chevy Silverado HD Units Built Without Hood Insulation

GM has decided it will ship certain 2023 Chevy Silverado HD units to dealerships without hood insulation due to an ongoing shortage of insulation material or another related component.

GM began producing certain examples of the 2023 Chevy Silverado HD without hood insulation on June 1st, 2022. This feature is typically standard across all Silverado HD trim levels except for the base Work Tuck (WT).

Just as with other GM vehicles affected by the hood insulation shortage, all 2023 Chevy Silverado HD models affected by this change are indicated as such by a window sticker, in this case showing the associated component RPO code R8V. It’s unclear at this time if customers will receive a credit for purchasing a vehicle affected by this constraint, but GM already has a plan in place to retrofit affected vehicles at a later, yet-to-be-disclosed date. Vehicles will be retrofitted by technicians at GM dealerships only.

The Chevy Silverado HD lineup continues largely unchanged for 2023 over the preceding model year, with GM set to introduce a refreshed version of the full-size heavy-duty truck for the 2024 model year. As such, it sticks with the same engine options, including the naturally aspirated 6.6L V8 L8T gasoline engine, rated at 401 horsepower at 5,200 rpm and 464 pound-feet of torque at 4,000 rpm, as well as the 6.6L V8 L5P turbodiesel Duramax engine, rated at 445 horsepower at 2,800 rpm and 910 pound-feet of torque at 1,600 rpm.

The 2023 Chevy Silverado HD is also now $1,000 pricier across the board, as we reported previously, with the truck now starting at $42,295 for the entry-level 2500HD in the WT trim. Production of the full-size truck takes place at the GM Flint plant in Michigan, as well as the GM Oshawa plant in Ontario.

  1. Can’t Owens Corning make the hood insulation, a US company. Stop relying on Asian countries that can’t fulfill gm orders. The whole supply chain is ridiculous. Bring back the vendor supply chain to north America. Saving a few $ on parts not coming with your new vehicles is pissing off your customers. An iou isn’t cutting it. Gm are u listening.
