Wrecks Hurt Nascar Chevy Teams At Michigan 2022: Video

After a strong showing in recent weeks, the Nascar Chevy teams were stricken by late-race wrecks and penalties that prevented them from dominating the Cup Series race at Michigan International Speedway on Sunday, August 7th.

Ross Chastain, driver of the No. 1 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1, came to life in Stage 2, taking advantage of a two-tire pit stop to leap into the lead. He led the No. 20 Toyota TRD Camry of Christopher Bell and the No. 11 Camry of Denny Hamlin, until Hamlin managed to slip by on Lap 80. Then, on Lap 93, Chastain’s No. 1 Camaro had fallen back to third, and he pitted, but was forced to serve a pass-through penalty due to an uncontrolled tire.

However, in Stage 3, Chastain’s No. 1 Camaro rallied back and went after Bell’s No. 20 Camry and helped the No. 99 Camaro of Daniel Suarez to the lead. With 42 laps left, Bell’s No. 20 Camry tried to throw a block on Chastain’s No. 1 Camaro and ended up in the wall. Suarez’s No. 99 Camaro, meanwhile, suffered a flat left front tire with six laps left, ending his hopes of winning. Kevin Harvick’s No. 4 Ford Mustang had control of the race by this point, and without the threat of any Nascar Chevy teams, won by a large margin.

The best-finishing Camaro was that of Kyle Larson, who guided the No. 5 Nascar Chevy to a seventh-place finish. Alex Bowman’s No. 48 Camaro was the only other Bow Tie team to finish in the top 10, salvaging a ninth-place finish after starting 30th.
