General Motors has unveiled the all-new 2023 GMC Canyon, pulling the sheets on a fresh third generation for the midsize pickup. Highlights include the reveal of the off-road capable 2023 GMC Canyon AT4X trim level, revised exterior styling, an overhauled cabin, a new powertrain, and a range of tech goodies.
Outside, the 2023 GMC Canyon is taller and wider than the previous generation, improving the pickup’s approach, departure, and breakover angles. The front air dam was also removed, while LED exterior lighting complements the fully refreshed exterior design.
Inside, we find an overhauled cabin design as well, with a standard 8-inch digital instrument cluster for Elevation and AT4 trims, and 11-inch instrument cluster for Denali and AT4X trims.
The 2023 GMC Canyon is offered with a wealth of tech features, including available underbody cameras, an available head-up display, and wireless Apple CarPlay / Android Auto compatibility. Google Built-in (Google Automotive Services) is also available. The tech stuff extends to safety features as well, with the standard Pro Safety Package adding in Automatic Emergency Braking, Front Pedestrian Braking with Bicyclist Detection, IntelliBeam auto high beams, Following Distance Indicator, Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning, and Forward Collision Alert. The Canyon Safety Plus Package is also available for even more safety tech.
Under the hood, the 2023 GMC Canyon is equipped as standard with the turbocharged 2.7L I4 L3B gasoline engine. Although the L3B is available in multiple states of tune in the recently released, redesigned 2023 Chevy Colorado, the 2023 GMC Canyon is only available with the top 2.7L Turbo High Output tune, rated at 310 horsepower and 430 pound-feet of torque.
With regard to the drivetrain, the 2023 GMC Canyon Elevation is available with either 2WD or 4WD, while the AT4, AT4X, and Denali trim levels are equipped with 4WD as standard.
For those customers looking for maximum off-road capability, the new-for-2023 GMC Canyon AT4X features an extra one-inch lift over the rest of the line, as well as standard 33-inch MT tires, Multimatic DSSV dampers, front and rear lockers, underbody skid plates, and an exclusive Baja drive mode for high-speed driving on the rough stuff. Inside, the 2023 GMC Canyon AT4X includes an Obsidian Rush colorway with Ceramic White accents.
The AT4X trim is also available with the highly limited Edition 1 package, which includes underbody cameras, an off-road bumper with a safari bar, a winch, 17-inch beadlock capable wheels, a reconfigurable bed rail system, a performance front skid plate, and Edition 1 badging.
The 2023 GMC Canyon is scheduled to hit production on January 25th, with the new AT4X trim set to roll off the line in the spring of 2023. Production will take place at the GM Wentzville plant in Missouri. The Canyon AT4X Edition 1 will start at $63,350 before the destination freight charge, and reservations are now open. The Canyon lineup will start at around $40,000 before DFC.

Jonathan, a few questions for you:
– Do you know when GMC is planning to open reservations for the trims aside from just the AT4X Edition 1?
– Do you know if the other trims will be manufactured after or before the AT4X Edition 1? GMC’s site says that the AT4X Edition 1 and AT4X are available “Spring 2023” and that the other trims are available “Early 2023”.
– Will other color combinations of interior be available than what is shown in the pictures? I’m specifically not fond of the tan and wood trim in the Denali and am curious if they’ll be say an all black interior for example.
Way to go GM. I think you made two incredible looking trucks. Although I like the Colorado a tad bit more than the Canyon, they have done a great job with this truck.
1. I like that both took styling from their bigger counterparts.
2. Putting further differences in between the Coloradonis only going to help them more.
3. I understand why they offer the high output 2.7 in as standard. For one it’s the very bottom of the pickup sales. Making this more attractive and having that as standard is a good sale. I just don’t like that the Colorado has 3.. you only need 2.
I’m willing to criticize the crap out of GM and I gotta say I’d have a hard time picking between Colorado and Canyon. Both look awesome to me. I think Canyon edges slightly ahead.
very disappointed in the lack of longer bed. and only one cab option, with less room than before? They will sell like crazy first year, then in 2025 the used market will be full of these overpriced grocery getter trucks.
ahhh just saw now … so normal that not saw a difference other posts… yeah a pick up used to be so
Any chance of a SCSB are absolutely gone.
Pitty, because both look so good too.
I think the new Canyon looks awesome. I really like the look of the new front end. I have a 2022 Denali and the grill is ridiculous. I just accepted that it is a Denali thing…. I wasn’t forced to buy it. I think the new Denali interior is beautiful. So far I am really enjoying the little diesel and I’m sorry that it is no longer an option. It sounds like, on paper at least, the 2.7 is quite torquey. Being as old as I am has become quite disappointing when buying a vehicle. I remember when you could walk into a dealership and it was YOU that told them what engine and transmission combination your new vehicle would have.
Maybe i am too critical but the new look just seems to blend in with all other trucks, it reminds me of a tacoma.
GM seemed to level out the truck as well, like every other truck. My 2022 has that wedge look which i like and it does not look like every other truck out there. sorry.
I can’t put my finger on it, but for some reason the squared grill segments gave me vibes of an earlier model from…I want to say Isuzu? I don’t know, I probably way off base.
Overall though like that it feels more rugged that the last gen. I can’t get over the price of vehicles in general these days. Never would I have imagined paying in the $60k range for a midsize truck. $40k for the lesser model isn’t bad though and I still get the same engine and interior.
JT,
Maybe they’re pricing these trucks so high in an attempt to drive buyers to their EVs. Suddenly the EV are priced in line with ICE vehicles. Car and Driver said the AT4 price jumped $20,000 and, I believe, the engine went from a V6 to a four banger. I’m not sure what gm’s thinking could be. It could also be that they’re trying to make more off these products to pay for their massive EV costs but I’m with you, spending $60,000 on a mid-size, four-cylinder truck with a tiny bed as the only option is unthinkable. They’ve basically turned these trucks into off-road vehicles configured like the useless Explorer Sport-Trac.
We’ll see what Toyota does with the new Tacoma.
So much emphasis on off road. Don’t get it. Aggressive tires on the Denali?
How many people actually ride in the wilderness VS the highways?
These are going to be very nice loaded up but at a hefty price. Can’t imagine paying over 65K for a fully loaded Denali which you won’t get until next spring at best. Crazy!
All of these might barely fit in a normal garage. They say they are about 81.7 inches tall. You may have 7 ft garage door but your opening is not that big. I guess if I get the AT4x it might have sit outside….:(
The price jump is only on the special additon. Take on the winch, probably 1000 to 1500 dollars. Take off the bumper probably the same. Take off rail setup on the bed. Probably 1000, take off the bead locker wheels and tires. 1500 dollars.. I sure there are other things on it we don’t see. So a AT4x will probably start around 50k ….
40.000! The out going Canyon is like 25,000 ish. Like the interior but stop paying for this nonsense

The point is at some point the higher price point small rigs do start to overlap some lower middle full sizes. Many will choice a lower model full size with a V8 over a higher model small truck. That is what history has shown
