The GM Authority Take

GMC Terrain sales performance improved during Q2 2022, despite various production-related constraints. Since no 2022 GMC Terrain units were built between June and November 2021, the compact crossover’s availability at dealer lots was substantially diminished. In fact, the ongoing global semiconductor microchip shortage has disrupted production of the 2022 GMC Terrain on multiple occasions, impacting both available inventory and resulting sales volume. In January 2022, production finally commenced for the 2022 GMC Terrain AT4 and Denali at the GM San Luis Potosi plant, per GM’s tiered rollout cadence for the refreshed (2022) model. Better yet, GM announced in March that it will increase production of the Equinox and Terrain in Mexico, a decision the automaker affirmed in June.

The Terrain received a refresh for the 2022 model year consisting of new front and rear fascias, along with several minor updates to the cabin and a new trim level in the form of the Terrain AT4, a new off-road-flavored trim that will be offered exclusively with AWD. The refreshed Terrain was initially planned and announced for the 2021 model year, but difficulties stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic pushed the model to the 2022 model year.

The 2023 GMC Terrain, meanwhile, arrives as the sixth model year of the latest second-gen Terrain, introducing a few critical changes and updates as compared to the fully refreshed 2022 model year. One of these updates is a new powerplant, namely the turbocharged 1.5L I4 LSD gasoline engine. Output from the LSD is rated at 175 horsepower at 5,800 rpm and 203 pound-feet of torque at 2,000 rpm. The new turbocharged engine will replace the turbocharged 1.5L I4 LYX gasoline engine previously equipped by the 2022 GMC Terrain. Notably, output is similar between the two boosted four-cylinder engines, with the LYX rated at 170 horsepower at 5,600 rpm and 203 pound-feet of torque at 2,000 rpm. The 2023 Terrain will continue utilizing the GM 9-speed automatic transmission for cog swaps, the same transmission configuration used by the 2022 Terrain.

The 2023 Terrain will also come equipped with an electro-hydraulic braking system, meaning GMC’s crossover will follow in the footsteps of the closely related Cadillac XT4, which has featured e-assist brakes for a few years now. Cadillac says this system can enhance fuel economy and takes up less space under the vehicle’s hood, replacing the traditional vacuum-assisted brakes setup.

The 2023 GMC Terrain is set to enter production on August 22nd, 2022.

2023 Honda CR-V

Any enhancements to GMC’s offering is good news as competition continues to be fierce in the segment, the latest being the ever-popular and best-selling Honda CR-V debuting a next-generation model for 2023.

  1. I may have missed an article on this or forgot, but can someone tell what the “new” 1.5L (LSD) engine does/gives over the “old” 1.5L (LYX)? From what I see it’s only 5 more HP at 200 more RPM and the same torque/RPM.

  2. But how can this be, it doesn’t offer the 2.0 so sales can’t increase. How can the equinox sell so well with that 1.5T in there? This is a vehicle that car enthusiasts buy in a market driven by car enthusiasts, I am so confused…

  3. I guess that 1.5L engine doesn’t bother the majority of Terrain enthusiasts !

  5. My wife wanted me to look at the Terrain… I looked at the motor specs and took a hard pass… I went with the 2022 Acadia Denali AWD with the 3.6 V6… It has lots of get-up and go… Had I got the base 2.0 engine, I would have been kicking myself in the ass.
