The GM Authority Take
GMC Canyon sales have been hampered by limited inventory as a result of idled production throughout 2021 as a result of a shortage of supplies, including the ongoing global semiconductor microchip shortage. To address the microchip issue, GM announced it will have its own family of microchips locked in by 2025.
More recently, Canyon production was idled in December, this time due to renovations at the GM Wentzville plant in preparation for building the next-generation 2023 GMC Canyon and 2023 Chevy Colorado. Production was again down in January, finally resuming at the end of that month.
However, the next-generation truck has finally been revealed Just this month, GM unveiled the all-new 2023 GMC Canyon as the all-new, third generation of the midsize pickup to take on all rivals. Highlights include revised exterior styling, an overhauled cabin, a new powertrain, and a range of high-tech features.
Under the hood, the 2023 GMC Canyon is equipped as standard with the turbocharged 2.7L I4 L3B gasoline engine as the lone powertrain option rated at 310 horsepower and 430 pound-feet of torque. It is mated to an updated version of the GM eight-speed automatic that addresses many of the transmission’s shortcomings.
The 2023 Canyon lineup includes the Elevation, Denali, AT4 off-roader and all-new AT4X as an even more capable off-roader. The extremely limited 2023 GMC Canyon AT4X with Edition 1 package features underbody cameras, an off-road bumper with a safari bar, a winch, 17-inch beadlock capable wheels, a reconfigurable bed rail system, a performance front skid plate, and Edition 1 badging.
Outside, the 2023 Canyon is taller and wider than the previous generation, improving the pickup’s approach, departure, and breakover angles since all models in the Elevation, AT4, and Denali trim come standard with an off-road suspension package featuring an ultra-wide track and a two-inch factory lift. That results in an impressive standard ground clearance of 9.6 inches. The 2023 Canyon Elevation is available with either 2WD or 4WD, while the AT4, AT4X, and Denali trim levels are equipped with 4WD as standard. The front air dam was also removed, while LED exterior lighting complements the fully refreshed exterior design.
The 2023 Canyon AT4 expands on the off-road performance with 17-inch off-road wheels and tires, a faux front skid plate, red-painted tow hooks, gloss black exterior trim and red-accented AT4 exterior and interior badging. The 2023 Canyon AT4X, meanwhile, features an additional one-inch lift over the rest of the line, as well as standard 33-inch MT tires, Multimatic DSSV dampers, front and rear e-lockers, underbody skid plates, and an exclusive Baja drive mode for high-speed driving on the rough stuff.
Inside, we find an overhauled cabin design as well with upgraded surfaces featuring soft-touch materials and stitching all around. The all-new interior comes with a new standard 8-inch digital instrument cluster for Elevation and AT4 trims, and an 11-inch digital instrument cluster for Denali and AT4X trim. An 11.3-inch infotainment display is standard across the lineup, featuring wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, plus Google Built-in (Google Automotive Services), an available head-up display, and wireless phone charger.
The 2023 GMC Canyon is scheduled to enter production on January 25th, 2023, with the new AT4X trim set to roll off the line in the spring of 2023. Pricing is set to start at around $40K.
Production of the 2022 Canyon was originally slated to end in October of this year, with orders for the 2022 model year halted in July. Now, however, sources familiar with the matter indicate that production of the 2022 Canyon will be extended by two months. As such, the final production date will be December 23rd, with the last order window set for the week of October 20th.
So while we’ll have to wait for the next-generation Canyon until next year, sales will surely take off when it arrives, as they undoubtedly will for the next-generation Colorado, given that GM can build the trucks with as little or no interruptions. That should help GM put pressure on Toyota for midsize truck dominance. This space will be fun to watch.
