Four Nascar Chevy Teams Starting Top Five In Richmond August 20221
The Nascar Chevy teams dominated the top five starting positions during qualifying for the August 2022 race at Richmond Raceway, including the pole position.
Kyle Larson, driver of the No. 5 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 and defending Cup Series champion, nabbed the first starting position with a time of 23.042 seconds around the short asphalt oval, topping out at 117.177 mph. Starting beside him in second place will be the No. 1 Camaro of Ross Chastain, having posted a 23.1 second lap at 116.883 mph. Third will be the No. 11 Toyota TRD Camry of Denny Hamlin, followed by William Byron’s No. 24 Camaro in fourth. The No. 48 Nascar Chevy of Alex Bowman will start fifth.
Interestingly, Chase Elliott, driver of the No. 9 Camaro, is the only car fielded by Hendrick Motorsports that will not start in the top five. In fact, he will start 23rd when the green flag drops. Elliott is the current points leader in the Nascar Playoffs.
Meanwhile, quite a few teams failed pre-qualifying inspection twice. The No. 16 Chevy of Noah Gragson, the No. 31 Chevy of Justin Haley, the No. 6 Ford Mustang of Brad Keselowski, the No. 17 Mustang of Chris Buescher and the No. 38 Mustang of Todd Gilliland were all penalized during pre-qualifying inspection. Each team lost pit selection and had a crewmember ejected as a result. Nascar did not disclose the reasons for their inspection failures.
Additionally, Ty Gibbs will once again pilot the No. 45 Camry in Kurt Busch’s stead. Busch, the No. 45 Camry’s regular Cup Series driver, suffered a concussion four weeks ago in a qualifying wreck.
The green flag drops at Richmond at 3 p.m. ET on Sunday, August 14th.
