Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)
Chevy Spark sales during the second quarter of 2022 kept the city car in second place in its segment when ranked by sales volume. The Mitsubishi Mirage continued in first place with a 32 percent sales decrease year-over-year to 4,618 units, while the Spark accounted for 3,860 sales in spite of a 50 percent drop year-over-year. The discontinued Fiat 500 posted no sales.

From a segment share standpoint, the Spark posted a healthy 46 percent share compared to the Mirage’s 54 percent, essentially splitting this dwindling segment between the two competitors.
The mainstream city car segment contracted 42 percent to 8,478 units during Q2 2022, meaning Spark sales underperformed the segment average.
The GM Authority Take
Chevy‘s once segment-leading city car split the segment with Mitsubishi’s entry this quarter, reversing a downward trend that began roughly a year ago when the Mitsubishi began outselling the Chevy – a significant departure from the Spark’s typical position of being the best-selling model in its segment.
Production stoppages and delays stemming from ongoing component shortages has resulted in extremely low Spark inventory. In fact, in March 2022 there were still 11,500 Chevy Spark orders remaining to be filled. However, GM seems to have assembled enough units this quarter to get sales back up from almost non-existent levels seen earlier this year.
As we’ve noted before, the Chevy Spark will be discontinued after the 2022 model year, and its production capacity at the GM Changwon plant in South Korea will be converted for an upcoming “crossover coupe” Chevrolet model that will likely be the next-gen Trax. Note that the upcoming “crossover coupe” Trax will be entirely different from the current model of the same name, riding on a different architecture while using a different set of engines, among other differences.
Production of the Spark is scheduled to come to a close on August 31st, 2022. The final order cycle for the 2022 model year began on June 16th. The nameplate’s demise will result in a further contraction of Chevy’s offerings in the U.S. market that aren’t trucks, crossovers, or SUVs. With the departure of the Spark, Chevy’s only passenger-car offerings in the U.S. will be the Chevy Camaro, Chevy Corvette C8, and the Chevy Malibu sedan. The Malibu will be sunset around 2024, while the Camaro will be dropped in 2023.
Following the Spark’s discontinuation, the least-expensive vehicle in the Bow Tie brand’s U.S. lineup would have been the current Chevy Trax crossover, but the current Trax will also go out of production at the end of the 2022 model year. It’s currently unclear how Chevy will position the Trax’s “crossover coupe” replacement.
Another affordable Chevrolet model and passenger car, the Sonic, was discontinued after the 2020 model year. On a related note, the Spark’s exit will also leave the the Chevy Trailblazer as the only other model to offer the outdoor-focused Activ trim in the U.S. and Canadian markets.
Chevy’s complete exit from the city car and subcompact and compact passenger car segments in the U.S. and Canada leaves room for several future Chevrolet models, including the Chevy Bolt EV and Bolt EUV, the aforementioned Trax “crossover coupe,” as well as several upcoming electric models – the Chevy Blazer EV and Equinox EV crossovers, both of which are set to launch in 2023. Neither of these, however, will be able to match the affordable nature of the Spark, which is currently priced to start at $13,600 in the U.S.

If Chevy would have made the cars the Spark would have been number one.
There were and still are not any Sparks on the car lots.
I ordered a new 2022 Chevy Spark on February 9th. Gm has still not given it a build date after 6 months. I have seen and read of other Sparks with same trim and options ordered after that were built and shipped.
Why wouldn’t GM produce vehicles with the same trim and options in the order in which they are ordered? Especially when my vehicle had a customer name and the vehicle was already sold when delivered to the dealer.
It don’t look like now I will get my Spark at all even after waiting 6 months.
The dealer has no reason as to why this happened and does not want to call their Reps. to try to find out why this car will not be made.
Customer Service even in car sales has really gone to the dogs.
I have been a GM customer for over 50 years and have purchased over 20 new GM vehicles, but after this trick by GM I will have to evaluate my future car purchases.
chevelleguy60: I read your comment with great interest. Over the past 8 years, I’ve had several Sparks and loved them all. The last one I had was a 2020 1LT Special Edition. That was a fantastic car for the money. As many on here may know, I work in the automotive sector and keep up well on what the markets are doing. This all comes down to the micro-chip issues and lack of inventory. But to break it down more:
1. Not nearly enough chips to build the cars (this includes EVERY brand from all over the world).
2. GM, like all brands, are concentrating on the high profit models since they can’t build enough cars.
3. Doing #2 allows them to be profitable with less sales. Don’t take this personally.
4. Don’t think for one second that things are better at Toyota, Honda, Kia, Mazda, Volvo, Ford, etc.
5. GM is rolling into the build-out phase for the Spark now since they decided to kill it off (stupidly) just to make yet another crossover.
My suggestion would be to find the exact same car somewhere and buy that one before it’s too late. If I’m not mistaken, I think the Spark has already ended production.
I’m confused too over the production information. In April there was a 10,000 + backlog of orders. Chevy took orders for the next two months. 2nd quarter production was 3,800. That left 2 months to fill all the orders. On top of that the factory was shut down for 2 weeks. Production ends next week. Probably 10-14 thousand orders not fulfilled. Including mine.

Thanks for your reply and comments.
I agree with all you said. I do have knowledge of those issues, but appreciate your response.
Something told my by knowing those things which I had read back in December that it might be that I would not get the car since they were discontinuing after August 30th. That is why I turned the order in plenty early the 9th of February.
What I do not understand is GM never did pick up the order from the dealer.
And this was a sold vehicle to a customer.
But GM built thousands of Sparks that were ordered after my order, with many with the same trim and options as my order.
I can understand not building with some options or later orders with maybe running out of materials including chips, but why were the first ordered vehicles not made first?
This my biggest question.
Just for information in general, I was told by the dealer that even on GM trucks that when dealer orders a truck for somebody that GM will say if certain options are deleted from the order that they can build the truck much faster. This I can understand with the supply chain situation.
But to build later ordered vehicles with same identical options and not build first ordered vehicles at all is what I don’t understand.
