Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)

Cadillac XT5 sales during the second quarter of 2022 kept the luxury crossover in eighth place out of 13 entries in the D-segment luxury crossover segment when ranked by sales volume. The Lexus RX remained at the top, like it has for the past year, with a six percent decrease in sales to 26,974 units while the Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class (comprised of the GLC-Class and GLC-Class Coupe) placed second with a 31 percent increase to 19,149 units. The BMW X3 placed third with a 12 percent slide to 18,710 units while the Audi Q5 placed fourth with a 17 percent drop to 15,621 units. It was followed by the Acura MDX in fifth with a 49 percent drop to 10,052 units, and the Volvo XC60 in sixth with a 25 percent decrease to 9,514 units. The Lincoln Nautilus (see running Lincoln Nautilus sales) placed seventh with a 12 percent bump to 6,766 units, followed by the XT5 in eighth with a 37 percent decrease to 6,641 units. The rest of the field each recorded less than 3K deliveries.

From a segment share standpoint, the XT5 held a five percent share, down two percentage points. The RX posted a 22 percent segment share, up two percentage points, while the GLC-Class held a 15 percent share, up five percentage points. The X3 maintained a 15 percent share and the Q5 maintained a 13 percent share. The MDX posted a share of eight percent, down six percentage points, as did the XC60, down one percentage point. The Nautilus held a five percent share, up one percentage point.

We should note that Lexus RX sales now include the two-row RX and the three-row RXL, with the two-row model competing against the XT5 with the three-row RXL being a rival to the Cadillac XT6. As such, a more apt comparison would be to pit XT5 and XT6 sales against those of the RX.

Doing so gives Cadillac a combined 12,240 deliveries, still less than half of the 26,974 units moved by the Lexus RX family.

The D-segment luxury crossover segment contracted 15 percent to 124,583 units during Q2 2022, meaning XT5 sales significantly underperformed the segment average.

The GM Authority Take

Cadillac XT5 sales continued to fall substantially faster than the segment average due to production issues, including but not limited to the ongoing global semiconductor microchip shortage. To address the microchip issue head-on GM, announced it will have its own family of microchips locked in by 2025. Until then, even with production back on line, GM hasn’t been able to resupply the XT5 inventory pipeline enough to reverse the negative sales trend during the second quarter or during the first half of the 2022 calendar year.

Production of the 2023 Cadillac XT5 began on June 10th, 2022, at the GM Spring Hill plant in Tennessee, alongside its larger sibling, the XT6, GMC Acadia, and Cadillac Lyriq. GM originally planned to introduce a heavy refresh for the 2023 XT5, but GM Authority recently learned that this model has been shelved. As a result, the current model will soldier on without a redesign for the 2023 model year.

2023 Lexus RS

Meanwhile, Lexus unveiled the all-new 2023 Lexus RX in May. The new model debuts a long list of changes and updates for this key XT5 rival, including new styling, new tech, and a range of powertrain options highlighted by a new performance hybrid variant.

Currently, the all-new electric Cadillac Lyriq crossover, which is larger than the current XT5, is in production at the Spring Hill facility, where GM plans to build even more EV models. That could include a new, smaller Cadillac EV crossover, although recent whispers have indicated that the sub-Lyriq model will be built in Mexico. How all that will affect XT5 production going forward, or the general future of the model, remains to be seen. It’s also worth noting that production of the next-generation GMC Acadia will move to the GM Lansing Delta Township plant in Michigan, where it will be produced alongside the Chevy Traverse and Buick Enclave. The XT5, along with the Traverse, Enclave, Acadia, and Cadillac XT6, uses different variants of the same GM C1 platform.

  1. If they had made the changes to the 2023 XT5 ,sales would have picked up .

  2. I get that the Lexus is well-made, and I have owned four of the earlier versions. But I have a Cadillac now because there is no denying that the new RX is less than attractive to look at.

  3. “Microchips locked in by 2025” at which time will the XT5 be around?

  4. So there won’t be a heavy refrezh of the XT5, the model will probably go away after 2023. On that note I’m hoping the XT6 gets the same interior refresh as the 2024 XT4 and an optional Turbo V6.
