The GM Authority Take

Cadillac CT5 sales saw a very healthy improvement during the second quarter of 2022 compared to both last quarter and year-over-year in spite of production being halted for a week in April at the GM Lansing Grand River plant in Michigan due to a parts shortage. Despite the healthy uptick in sales on a percentage basis, the CT5 is still seeing relatively low sales volume, especially when pitting sales against the combined volume from BMW (12,820 units) and Audi (8,213).

CT5 production is back on track now, but it was severely hampered by the ongoing global semiconductor microchip shortage during 2021 and parts of 2022. As a result, GM recently announced that it will have its own family of microchips locked in by 2025, a move that is expected to offset future chip-related production delays. Even 2023 Cadillac CT5 production was recently pushed back one week, while production at the plant was down last week due to a supplier-related parts shortage.

Going forward, the key to increasing Cadillac CT5 sales will be to build and then ship enough models to dealers to meet demand for the luxury sedan family, which includes the CT5, CT5-V, and CT5-V Blackwing. The new high-performance Blackwing is an absolute beast of a machine producing a mean, defined exhaust note thanks to its tried-and-true supercharged 6.2L LT4 V8 gasoline engine. In fact, prior to the arrival of the Escalade-V, the CT5-V Blackwing is the most powerful Cadillac ever made.

As a reminder, the CT5 is the “regular” model, the CT5-V is the mid-tier performance model, and the CT5-V Blackwing is the ultra-high-performance variant. The 2022 Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing has sold well, and Cadillac recently announced the 120th Anniversary Edition for the 2023 model year to commemorate the founding of the luxury marque in 1902. The release of the special edition follows the release of the Collector Series, which stands apart from the rest of the lineup as the first 250 CT5-V Blackwing units produced.
