General Motors has issued a voluntary product emissions recall for certain examples of the 2022 Chevy Equinox crossover due to an issue related to the compact crossover’s catalytic converter.
The problem: affected vehicles were fitted with the incorrect catalytic converter at the factory. A catalytic converter is part of the exhaust system that converts harmful compounds in exhaust gasses into safer pollutants.
The hazards: while an incorrect catalytic converter does not pose a safety issue to driver or vehicle occupants, it will affect vehicle’s tailpipe emissions and may therefore cause the vehicle to no longer comply with federal emissions regulations.
The fix: certified GM technicians will be instructed to inspect the catalytic converter on affected vehicles and replace it with the correct part if necessary. These repairs will be performed at no cost to the vehicle owner.
Affected components: catalytic converter.
Affected vehicles:
- 2022 Chevy Equinox
Number of affected vehicles: GM did not specify how many vehicles are affected by this condition, however it did say that only a small number of vehicles are believed to have been fitted with the wrong catalytic converters at the factory. The Chevy Equinox is produced at the  GM Ramos Arizpe plant and the GM San Luis Potosà plant, both located in Mexico. The automaker began producing the 2023 model-year Chevy Equinox there on August 22nd, 2022.
