OnStar is celebrating its ninth anniversary in Mexico, while announcing that GM’s telematics services division leads the Mexican market with more than 220,000 active subscribers.
On June 26th, 2013, OnStar began its operations in Mexico, becoming the pioneer of connected on-board services, and has kept growing ever since. In January, OnStar surpassed the 200,000 subscriber mark and today has 220,000 customers, a 20 percent increase compared to the beginning of the year.
“We are delighted to celebrate nine years in Mexico, a time in which we have been key players in the evolution of the automotive industry towards an environment of connected vehicles to achieve a positive impact on people’s lives,” said Director of Global Customer Connectivity Experience and OnStar at GM Mexico, Gonzalo Escobar, in a statement. “It is a great satisfaction to keep our customers connected and assist them when they need it most,” he added.
Among OnStar’s most sought-after services in its nine years of presence in Mexico is stolen vehicle assistance, which has been the most efficient in North America with an 80 percent effectiveness rate and a record time of six minutes from the time the theft is reported to the vehicle’s recovery by the authorities. In addition, OnStar has provided more than 35,000 emergency services and 4,300 ambulances to attend to urgent situations.
Along with the increase in subscribers over the course of the year, OnStar’s data consumption in Mexico has registered a 60 percent rise, with more than 1,300,000 gigabytes consumed by users so far. The most used video applications are YouTube, Netflix and Disney+, while Spotify, iTunes and Apple Music are the most used audio apps. Meanwhile, Facebook, TikTok and Instagram are the most popular social media apps used in GM vehicles in Mexico.
OnStar continues its growth in Mexico with exclusive services such as Guardian, a mobile protection and security application for up to seven members linked to a single account. This app provides roadside assistance, emergency service, geolocation and response for all family members in case of an accident. It also provides the OnStar Vehicle Insights (OVI) solution for fleets.
