No. 9 Nascar Chevy On Pole At Atlanta July 2022 Race After Qualifying Rained Out

Rain showers wreaked havoc at Atlanta Motor Speedway, prompting Nascar to cancel on-track qualifying for the second time at the Georgia racetrack this year. Instead, the starting lineup was set per the sanctioning body’s rulebook, putting Chase Elliott in the No. 9 Nascar Chevy Camaro ZL1 on the pole for Sunday’s race.

As a reminder, Nascar developed a formula to determine starting order if a qualifying event is canceled. The sanctioning body sets the field by taking into account a specific driver’s rank in points standings, their finish in the previous race, and rank of the driver’s fastest lap in the previous race.

Elliott has been on a hot streak as of late, having won at Nashville just two weeks ago and posting a runner-up finish to Tyler Reddick’s No. 8 Camaro last week at Road America. He’s also at the top of current points standings. Incidentally, Elliott’s No. 9 Camaro also started from the pole at Road America, although this metric did not factor into the formula.

Ross Chastain in the No. 1 Camaro will start second, followed by the No. 5 Camaro of defending Cup Series champion Kyle Larson in third. Fourth will be Reddick’s No. 8 Nascar Chevy, while the No. 2 Ford Mustang of Austin Cindric will start fifth.

Atlanta Motor Speedway was reconfigured for the 2022 season, resulting in a style of pack racing similar to super speedways such as Daytona and Talladega. It has been colloquially referred to as “mini Daytona” leading up to this event. William Byron, driver of the No. 24 Camaro, took home the victory after a wild race at the speedway back in March. He will start 13^th.

Weather permitting, the green flag will drop on Sunday, July 10^th at 3 p.m. ET.
