Michigan To Get New EV Training Center

Between its existing GM Lake Orion plant, which builds the Chevy Bolt EV and Bolt EUV, and its new Factory Zero facility, it’s clear that GM is investing heavily in electric vehicle production in its home state of Michigan. Lawmakers are on board with GM’s vision for an electrified future, it seems, as the state this week announced $130 million in funding to construct a new training and educational center for electric vehicles on the University of Michigan’s Ann Arbor campus.

The EV training center will help educate and teach U of M students on electric vehicles, helping to prepare a new, highly-skilled workforce to operate in the emerging electric vehicle industry. Rick Fitzgerald, a spokesperson for the University of Michigan, told Crains Detroit Business the facility will support other EV-focused ventures the school is undertaking, including its dedicated battery lab, its robotics program and its Transportation Research Institute.

“The creation of the Michigan Electric Vehicle Center will allow the state to leverage the existing resources at U-M and the state’s other educational institutions to focus on the future of electric vehicle technology and workforce development,” Fitzgerald told the publication. “It will be designed to leverage the existing facilities within or near the College of Engineering on North Campus.”
“This state investment is critical to solidifying the leadership position of our state — and our nation — in the electric vehicle industry,” he added.
While GM is not directly involved in funding or supporting the new EV training center, the automaker will benefit from a skilled Michigan workforce that has received education and training specific to electric vehicles. The automaker is currently developing countless EVs at its various Michigan engineering centers, including its Milford Proving Ground and Warren Tech Center, and will produce numerous EVs at its aforementioned GM Lake Orion and Factory Zero facilities.

  1. I shake my head as GM continues to put more of their corporate eggs in the EV basket. This is a huge gamble, I can’t believe that the Board is all in. They are blinded to their customers’ wants by government incentives and green dreams. The great awakening should begin this November!

    1. By this rationale, every single automaker in the world is making a mistake. I think 100+ for-profit and mostly publicly-traded automobile manufacturers aren’t all wrong about their future revenue streams.

      1. Not all of the others committed to EV 100% like GM. Not all of the others refused to offer hybrids like GM. GM is offering no alternatives for their customers. I still maintain it’s a huge gamble to put all of their eggs in the same basket. History has proven that many times.

  3. Does GM actually sell ANY ev’s currently? Or do they just take orders for future sales?

Since I’m still waiting for my new battery for my over 1 year old 2022 Bolt EUV, I’m assuming they aren’t selling any others.
