How To Use The 2023 Cadillac Lyriq’s Variable Regen On Demand Feature: Video

The 2023 Cadillac Lyriq comes standard with a Variable Regen on Demand feature. This system will help Cadillac Lyriq owners extend the usable range of the vehicle, if used properly, so let’s find out how to get the most out of it.
Variable Regen on Demand allows 2023 Cadillac Lyriq drivers to manually control how fast the vehicle slows down via the regenerative braking system by using a pressure-sensitive paddle located on the steering wheel. Those who have driven a Chevy Bolt EV or Bolt EUV will be familiar with paddle-operated Regen on Demand, however the Lyriq’s variable system is more sophisticated than the Bolt’s. Whereas that version operates like an on/off switch, the Lyriq’s is pressure sensitive and will adjust the deceleration rate based on how hard the user pulls the paddle. If the paddle is held at a certain pressure for a long enough duration, the vehicle will eventually come to a complete stop.
GM Authority was able to try out this new pressure-sensitive Variable Regen on Demand system during our recent test drive of the 2023 Cadillac Lyriq in Utah. The system works well, allowing for an intuitive way to slow the vehicle down via regenerative braking.
Regnerative braking captures some of the kinetic energy of the vehicle while it’s coasting and stores it in the battery. In a conventional vehicle, this energy is typically lost to the brake discs as it’s converted into heat, however EVs are able to capture this energy through the electric motor. Drivers that use regenerative braking to slow down their EV when possible can also reduce wear and tear on the brake pads and rotors, potentially reducing maintenance costs.

A particularly uninformative Video – other than the fact that apparently you have to go to the touch screen to implement One-Pedal-Driving… This is PROBABLY problematic.
In my 2019 VOLT and my 2022 BOLT EUV, I like to have MAXIMUM REGENERATION to minimize brake wear… Most trips I NEVER ever use the brake pedal…. But to get MAX REGEN You have to switch on the steering wheel paddle AND put the thing in ‘one-pedal mode’, which is easily done by a push-button switch on the middle console. The operation becomes second-nature after a few days,
Yes its dopey to have to use your right hand to slow the car down and then your left hand to slow it down faster, but this is just another example of GM ARROGANCE that uses Convoluted ways to do something ANYONE would like to do.
But in the Caddy – if it is EVEN MORE COMPLICATED TO SWITCH BETWEEN 1 AND 2 pedal modes, then I’ll have to just use more of the friction brakes sometimes since I hate leaving the cars in 1 pedal mode, which has the sensation of driving around in Second Gear all the time.
Of course, the video never mentions what I did here – namely instructions as to how to get the MAXIMUM REGENERATION possible.
