General Motors subsidiary OnStar just announced a new brand identity, and with it, an expansion of the OnStar safety and security subscription services, with OnStar Guardian now available for motorcycles, as well as integration with Amazon Alexa for at-home use.
“As part of this next chapter, OnStar is launching a modern, simpler design that represents its commitment to elevating the standards of safety and security, both inside and outside the vehicle,” OnStar states. “Now, OnStar continues to expand its safety services – to motorcycle riders and into the home through Amazon Alexa integration.”
OnStar Guardian is now available to all members in the U.S. and Canada with a motorcycle, offering around-the-clock access to Emergency Advisors and roadside assistance specifically tailored to bikers. The app can utilize smartphone sensors to detect when a member is either riding or driving, as well as to determine when a crash occurs based on a sudden change in acceleration. The app can then notify an OnStar Emergency Advisor, who can then triage the situation and contact first responders and even provide medical assistance until help arrives at the scene. Finally, motorcyclists will have access to roadside assistance services in the event they need a jump, fuel, or a tow.
Additionally, OnStar Guardian is now available for integration with Amazon Alexa for at-home assistance and safety services. The voice-command response can connect Guardian Members in the U.S. with an OnStar Emergency Certified Advisor through compatible Alexa-enabled devices, making it quick and easy to get assistance by simply saying “Alexa, call for help.” The services are expected to expand further for GM and non-GM customers at home in the future.
“These latest expansions, as well as our work with the public safety community to advance new technologies, illustrate how GM is delivering on its promise to becoming a software innovator and building on our subscription services expertise,” said vice president of OnStar Safety and Connectivity at GM, Jeff Massimilla.

Nice try GM, but it’s still not going to justify $30/month for SOS service, when Chrysler is charging $14 and Toyota wants $8. Even BMW is charging half that at $16.58/month.
You know it is bad when they are down to “Help, I’ve fallen and can’t get up”. Wonder if they are planning help with medicare part C plans too?
I think GM has ambitions to spin off Onstar. Otherwise it makes no sense keeping it around as a separate brand.
Isn’t it kind of late for that? Everyone else already has something like it.
The GM/Onstar (take advantage of the customer) plan has backfired. Shooting yourself in the foot is PAINFUL!
I didn’t use it on my 2007 and I won’t use it on my 2022. Nice try GM. How about giving us a spare one tire instead? Those things people might actually use….
Hate to say it but GM is not going to jam it down my throat forcing me to pay for something i have no use for, have been a GM owner for 60 years, you have seen the last of me if i am forced to spend 1500.00 for something I don’t want, what a nerve of GM to do this.
DO NOT NEED ON STAR. I just hope a lot of people feel the same way and say good by to GM, let alone GM is dropping colors that are favored , Dodge is putting GM to shame.
Well, owning multiple GMC vehicles for over the last 25 years is about to come to an end I suppose. It’s a shame that OnStar is such a worthless product/accessory, that consumers DON’T want, that GMC & BUICK feel the need to force it on their customers. I guess either a ” Blue Oval ” or Ram/Jeep are in my future.
Maybe they should bring back the remote key fob commands for free (lock, unlock and remote start) before they add more stuff people don’t want. Come on OnStar, Ford gives it free for life!
On Star internet was cool while on vacation and camping.
But it was to expensive for the small amount of data they give you.
Nice try but money is getting short and OnStar is way to expensive.
Dream on.
Ex GM employee and have bought14 new GM vehicles over the last 25 years. We have only ever used the basic OnStar to use for the remote start from the app. Just recently ordered a new Acadia for the wife and was informed of the $1500 OnStar requirement. We were very unhappy with this. We will be paying for features we will never use. Even when we had the free 3 months we never used them. I will be looking for a new truck next year and if this requirement is still in place I likely will be looking at other options. My father retired from GM and had finally had enough and purchased a subaru and loves it. OnStar is out dated and mostly unecesary. Most people do not need OnStar to make calls, be a hotspot, give directions or call in case of an accident. We all have cell phones now for that and if in an accident the person behind us can call.
I have 2 late model GMCs in my garage but will be looking for a different make to replace them soon. An accessory/option is something you are able to choose, not a “mandatory charge, whether you like it or not!” There are too many other choices out there. It’ sad!
