The Toyota Tundra followed in fifth place with a 12 percent slide to 21,673 units, while the Nissan Titan placed last with a 53 percent drop to just 4,797 units.

Accordingly, GM continues to reign as America’s best-selling purveyor of full-size pickup trucks.

The full-size mainstream pickup truck segment contracted 15 percent to 508,334 units in Q2 2022, meaning Sierra sales slightly underperformed the segment average.
The GM Authority Take
GMC Sierra sales fell in roughly in line with the segment average. Even so, combined sales of the two full-size GM trucks from Chevy and GMC kept the automaker at the top of the full-size mainstream pickup truck segment. One competitor will soon drop off the list, as Nissan is set to axe the Titan from its lineup due to low sales and demand. The full-size pickup was first introduced for the 2004 model year.
Sierra sales were again impacted by various production hurdles even as recently as June due to the ongoing global semiconductor microchip shortage. Production of the refreshed 2022 GMC Sierra was delayed back in February 2022 and again for two weeks in March before finally resuming in April. However, the refreshed 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 did begin to finally arrive at GM dealerships in the U.S. in March.
As a reminder, the GMC Sierra 1500 is assembled at the GM Fort Wayne plant in Indiana as well as at the GM Silao plant in Mexico, while the Sierra HD is produced at the GM Flint plant in Michigan. Additionally, production of the 2023 GMC Sierra 1500 will commence this August, GM Authority has learned.
We expect GMC Sierra sales to improve as more truck shoppers become interested in and purchase the refreshed 2022 GMC Sierra 1500. Highlights of the updated model include new exterior styling, a completely overhauled cabin, powertrain improvements, as well as the addition of the range-topping Sierra Denali Ultimate and the all-new Sierra AT4X off-roader. The Sierra Denali Ultimate is GMC’s most luxurious pickup yet, while the Sierra AT4X is (mostly) GMC’s equivalent to the new Silverado ZR2.
Beyond product-level reasons, we expect Sierra sales to improve as GM makes more of the full-size trucks.
It’s also worth noting that the recently-unveiled 2023 GMC Sierra AT4X AEV Edition will also be a draw for truck buyers, as Big Red’s most capable Sierra 1500 off-roader from the factory. American Expedition Vehicles (AEV) has previously collaborated with The General to create the Chevy Colorado ZR2 Bison. Beyond that, GM is hard at work on a refreshed GMC Sierra HD (2500 HD and 3500 HD).
The updated heavy duty trucks are expected to deliver updated styling, a new interior, more power and torque from the turbodiesel Duramax V8 engine, and a transmission upgrade for the 6.6L V8 L8T gasoline engine (expected to switch from the current 8-speed to the 10-speed). And, as GM Authority was first to report, GM is developing a new GMC Sierra HD AT4X as part of the 2024 model year refresh that will slot above the “regular” GMC Sierra HD AT4. Recent spy shots of a prototype Sierra HD AT4X confirm our original reporting.
In addition, GM Authority recently spied the refreshed 2024 GMC Sierra HD interior for the very first time, showing a new center stack configuration that most likely will mirror the one on the refreshed 2022 GMC Sierra 1500. It’s worth noting that the Sierra HD refresh was originally planned for the 2023 model year, but was delayed until 2024 as a result of continuing setbacks stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic, which has caused several GM vehicle launches to be delayed or otherwise pushed back by a model year.
In even bigger news, GM teased the upcoming electric GMC Sierra pickup at the end of last year. The electric GMC Sierra electric will be the third EV in GMC’s lineup, after the GMC Hummer EV pickup and GMC Hummer EV SUV. Just like the two GMC Hummer EV model variants, the electric Sierra will ride on GM’s BT1 platform while making use of GM’s Ultium battery system and Ultium Drive motors.
The introduction of the refreshed Sierra 1500, updated Sierra HD, and all-new Sierra EV, combined with expected higher production capacity, should boost sales of the nameplate, particularly given that a whopping 43 percent of pickup owners plan to own an electric truck in the next decade.

Comments
37 year loyal GM owner. Reserved my Denali ultimate in November ordered it and put my deposit down 1 January got my money back when they couldn’t produce super Cruise. Get no special accommodations on a 2023 since I’ve been waiting 10 months they have struggled to fix the things wrong. With my 2019 listen to a squeak in the front end for three years before they came up with the updated part I don’t have a lot of faith in GM right now.
big issue now is their suppliers don’t want to come back to GM
Difficult to find a truck and as dealer that knows what options are available. Dealers kept telling me GMC does not offer massage seats and no plans thru 2024. Talk to a guy in a denali and his had it already….one dealer said yes, he just sold one with the seats. I reserved my electric through him. I could not find a HD easily, and when you did they were 10K over MSRP. I will wait.
Well, what do they expect when there is no product to sell and what they do have to sell is marked up way over MSRP. I want a new AT4X, but when it’s priced like a Raptor and doesn’t offer the same off-road capabilities and prowess, they can keep it. If this is the new way of doing business I’ll just hang onto my 12 year old Duramax.
It offers more prowess and regular off road capabilities, just less in the high speed parts. Besides, chances are you fall in the 95% group who doesn’t off road and won’t need it so go buy an AT4 and save some coin or even a more luxurious model, chances are high you like all those goodies like leather massaging seats…
Watch sales drop even more once the forced OnStar goes full into effect. I was looking at a new Acadia for the wife but will stay with Chevrolet now.
