Full-Size GM Trucks Outsell Ford F-Series, Ram Pickup During Q2 2022

GM full-size truck sales decreased 15 percent to 205,353 units in the United States during the second quarter of 2022. Even so, the performance enabled the two GM truck nameplates – Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra – to outsell the Ford F-Series and Ram Pickup.

In fact, sales were down for all full-size trucks except for the F-Series, likely as a result of production disruptions stemming from material supply and constraints, including but not limited to the ongoing global semiconductor microchip shortage which impacted GM’s truck production this quarter. But as we’ve noted previously, GM recently announced that it will have its own family of microchips locked in by 2025 to address this particular issue.

Looking Ahead

While sales of the Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra were down year-over-year, they both improved over the preceding quarter (Q1 2022). This may be due to GM addressing production issues by adding a third shift for Silverado production at the Oshawa plant, among other strategies, as well as the arrival of the refreshed light duty Silverado and Sierra, which have been highly anticipated.

Adding to those updated lineups, The General recently teased the upcoming 2023 Chevy Silverado ZR2 Bison made in conjunction with American Expedition Vehicles (AEV) while also unveiling the similarly-capable 2023 GMC Sierra AT4X AEV Edition.

After that, GM will refresh its Heavy Duty models, the Silverado HD and Sierra HD. Both heavy duty models will receive a refresh for the 2024 model year, gaining updates like updated exterior styling, overhauled cabins, more power and torque for the 6.6L Duramax diesel engine, plus the replacement of the 6-speed automatic transmission with the 10-speed automatic for trucks equipped with the 6.6L V8 L8T gasoline engine.

And, as GM Authority first to report, both trucks will gain off-road-capable variants: the 2024 Silverado HD will gain the Silverado HD ZR2 while the 2024 Sierra HD will expand the AT4 range with the addition of the Sierra HD AT4X.

  1. Headline should read F up 5% for the qtr, gm down 1, D down 4.

      1. Assuming D is for Dodge.

        1. Well, the Charger and Challenger are doing really well, and the Dodge brand was at the top of the study, but I wouldn’t bother comparing them to trucks.

Come on. It’s been 12 years.

        2. Ram is now a separate division from Dodge, not a part of Dodge anymore.

          1. How can it be a division of Dodge, yet not be part of Dodge? Your comment makes no sense.

            1. Read it again Buzzard. He didn’t say it is a division of Dodge. He said it is a separate division. A separate division “from” Dodge. I.e. Buick is a separate division from Chevrolet. Ram is a separate division from Dodge. They’re all divisions of Stellantis. Get it!?

  2. Interesting how the Tundra, being all new, still struggles to sell 1/3 of the GMC alone. And the Titan is just pathetic in the lack of numbers. But we all read where the Titan is soon to be gone. Will Toyota pick up (pun intended) those Titan sales or will they go to one of the big 3?

    1. I would guess that if you’re going out of your way to avoid the Detroit 3 when you buy a full size truck, you’ll decide to buy the Toyota.
Because you’d really have to hate those brands to choose the Nissan over any of them.

    2. For whatever reason, truck buyers are very loyal to their brands

  3. First of all there are two trucks vs 1. Pretty sad it takes two trucks to outsell an f150.

    1. The GMC brand is just another trim level of the Silverado. Mechanically they are identical built on the same assembly lines. As far back as I can remember, Silverado and GMC 1500’s combine always outsold the F150. The biggest problem I have is just because one brand out sells the other, many tend to believe it’s a better truck, it’s not. Each brand has there own problems and advantages.

    2. Still built by the same company, and they are identical trucks.

    3. Yes in a way–Ford decided to delete the Mercury Truck line yeas ago– as did Dodge with Fargo

      Reply
      1. Except we are talking about U.S. sales. The mercury pick ups were only sold in Canada so that’s irrelevant.

    1. LOL, I would have agreed with you 20 years ago but after 5 Fords beginning with a 1970 F-100, I have switched to GM and will never go back. Today’s Fords are plagued with problems and GM’s seem to be getting better.

  6. That’s 10 consecutive quarters, dating back to Q1 2020, that GM full size pickups have outsold Ford’s. It’s all Barra’s fault !

    Reply
  7. Fact is Ford is gaining and Chevrolet can not keep up. Chevrolet has not been building the truck to get buyers in. Engine problems and 8speed transmission problems are wide spread.
