GM Design Team Shows Off Chevy Blazer EV Sketches

The veil was recently pulled off the Chevy Blazer EV last week. Now, the GM Design team has also revealed a handful of sketches that helped shape the EV crossover during its development.

The first set of design sketches depict a version of the Chevy Blazer EV that seems very close to the production model recently unveiled. The sketch places the Blazer EV in a variety of environments to give a good idea of how it interacts with the environment, and is shown driving down a road, and also being plugged in for charging. The exterior sketches were created by Eduardo Okamoto and Raphael Molina, and they are followed with a full-size, real-life model of the Blazer EV that was built for the design team to evaluate outdoors in natural light.

The next set of sketches shows off early version of the Blazer EV interior, including a preliminary pencil sketch to help visualize the scale of various aspects such as the steering wheel and infotainment screens. A top-down cutaway view shows off the dashboard and center stack in full color, helping designers get a handle on its depth and space. The full-color depiction demonstrates different materials and colors.

The interior sketches, which were drawn up by automotive designer Jacob Salmon, are featured in another post by GM Design’s Instagram. Another set of sketches shows an exploded view of the Chevy Blazer EV interior, demonstrating how each element of the door panel and center console fits together.

The Chevy Blazer EV will be available in front-, rear- and all-wheel drive configurations, while the trim level lineup will include 1LT, 2LT, RS and Blazer EV SS, along with a Police Pursuit Vehicle (PPV) model for law enforcement. GM is staying tight-lipped on how much power and range each of these various models will have, however certain configurations will offer up to 320 miles of GM-estimated range. The crossover will also feature 11.5 kW level 2 AC charging and standard DC public fast-charging capability of up to 190 kW, depending on the model, adding approximately 78 miles of range in 10 minutes, per GM estimates. The high-performance SS variant will throw as many as 557 horsepower.

  1. I hope it is received well once it becomes available. That said, allow me to comment on what my eye has told me. That it is over-styled, as if too many stylists for the chief designer to control got involved in the process. The front end is too busy for a car that does not need a large air intake up front.

Sure – corrections can be done under the cover of being an ‘annual facelift’ which has been a Detroit tradition for years, but that has become less of an effective solution as foreign brands which don’t follow that same strategy become more present in the market. And then there is Tesla – can anybody tell what ‘year’ a Tesla is? Perhaps the most ignored effect Tesla has had on the industry is their total dismissal of the ‘annual facelift’ changeover.

I guess what I am trying to say is- GM, stop throwing things out there to see what sticks. First define the styling goal clearly and simply, and then get it done.

    1. The front has virtually nothing on it. Just the grille and the under-headlight trims. Which are designed to be swapped between trim levels and “mid-cycle refreshes”.

The Corvette side scoop thing is a bit forced; but I’ll reserve judgement for that until I see it in person. Hopefully its a sign that the “Corvette subbrand” isn’t happening and Chevy will continue to have Corvette as it’s Halo car. That give Cadillac more room to compete at the top.

  2. My take here is they have tried to make sure they took a two box style and tried to make it uniquely Chevy.

GM gets hammered for not doing enough style wise and then for doing too much. In the CUV market it is tough to make something very original

The Blazer in the first photo was not that great looking but as more photos havre come I do like the styling. The real test is the first in person meeting. Often these cars today do not photo well or come out as well in computer generated photos.

I have shown this to several people who really did not know what it was and they all though ti looked good.

Lets keep this in perspective it is not a Aztek.

    1. The profile, third window looks quite ackward from certain angles. Seems to set a bit lower, almost like Nox, but just creates a bulbous profile.
This is the first Chevy grill/lighting that I’ve liked in a while and would look great across the line up. Other than the horsepower I can’t figure out why anyone would want a Blazer. Thought for sure that EV EV variant would be positioned against Bronco and be a smaller, less expensive Hummer.

  3. My personal opinion is overall the Blazer look good (the red one) and if hell froze over and was forced to buy an EV, I would buy the SS. I like the profile picture and the way it looks like the wheelbase is bigger than the ICE Blazer, the wheels look more pushed out towards the corners. Also, like the lines how they start wide apart at the front wheel and tapper to the rear wheels. Some people say the styling is too busy, to me it looks sporty, definitely better looking than any Tesla which I find ugly, again my opinion. A five-year-old Tesla looks the same as a brand new one. I also like EV Nox. So that said, please GM continue to offer ICE vehicles.

  4. The front panel on the LT Blazer EV models need to be as expressive as that on the first picture in the article with the more detailed pattern compared to the production model.

  5. You mean that GM is actually going to START building electric vehicles again? 2 per month or something like that?

  6. The Blazers design inside and out is really good. Great job to the entire GM Design Team that worked on it.
Having said that though, shame on GM for choosing to Build this in Mexico instead of here in the States.

  7. This the first Chevy EV that I would buy if I needed a new car and “had” to go EV. I suspect it will sell great and better as the age of buyer goes up.

  8. Oh boy, looks like little brother of the $300K Cadillac, particularly odd given that styling cue for Cadillac would be so similar to Chevrolet. But remember, GM is Killing all brands except it’s darling Golden child Chevrolet, so in a way it makes sense. Although it’s never made sense why GM Killed Oldsmobile, Pontiac, Saturn, SAAB, Holden, Daewoo, and why they tried to Kill Opel and Lotus. But I get it.
