Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)
During the second quarter of 2022, Chevy Silverado sales surpassed that of the Dodge Ram Pickup, placing the Bow Tie brand’s full-size truck line back into its usual second place spot in its competitive segment. The Ford F-Series (see running Ford F-series sales) once again led the segment, increasing just 0.26 percent to 158,644 units. Silverado sales decreased 13 percent to 143,032 units – which, as we mentioned above, enabled it to place second ahead of the Ram Pickup, which saw sales fall 28 percent to 117,867 units.
The Silverado’s corporate cousin, the GMC Sierra (see running GMC Sierra sales), decreased 17 percent to 62,321 units, placing it fourth in the segment. The Toyota Tundra followed in fifth, decreasing 13 percent to 21,673 units. Finally, the Nissan Titan brought up the final spot in sixth, decreasing 53 percent to 4,797 units. It’s worth noting that Nissan has no plans to redesign the Titan and that the nameplate is “dead,” indicating that the pickup will be discontinued after the current generation.

The GM Authority Take
Chevy Silverado sales propelled the nameplate to second place in Q2 2022, despite experiencing a 13 percent decrease in overall volume.
Production-related issues caused a low-supply scenario at the dealer level, resulting in sales being in the red. The scenario is mostly the result of the ongoing global microchip shortage, but it’s not limited exclusively to chips, as other materials are also under constraint. Currently, GM is holding 95,000 incomplete vehicles due to various parts shortages, according to the GM Q2 2022 sales report.
The General did not break down exactly which vehicles are most impacted by the parts situation, but it’s safe to assume that the Silverado is one of the top ones, given the nameplate’s popularity. For its part, GM says there is “significant pent-up demand for its vehicles amid low inventories,” so once those vehicles are completed and released for sale, we expect a healthy uptick in Chevy Silverado sales. However, dealers were recently warned that supply shortages could last well into the 2024 calendar year.
GM gave the Silverado 1500 a thorough refresh for the 2022 model year that addressed most, if not all, of the criticisms of the pre-refresh model. With that in mind, it’s only a matter of time before sales begin to reflect the newfound desirability of the updated truck, along with improved production volumes.
As a reminder, the refreshed 2022 Silverado boasts a revised front fascia along with a completely overhauled interior with new center stack complete with a 13.4-inch infotainment screen, a new center console, new 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, and the latest technology. The range-topping High Country model, for instance, offers GM’s innovative Super Cruise semi-autonomous driver assist system, a first for the Silverado. In addition, the 2022 Silverado ZR2 also joins the lineup as part of the refresh, and we expect it to further bolster Chevy Silverado sales.
Last year, Chevy revealed the Silverado EV. Set to launch in 2023 for the 2024 model year, the upcoming Silverado EV will first launch in the RST and WT (Work Truck) trims. Other trim levels, including the Silverado EV Trail Boss, are also planned. We recently spied a few prototypes undergoing testing, including one in black paint last week and another finished in silver.
The Chevy Silverado EV will ride on the all-new BT1 platform, a dedicated electric platform that uses Ultium Battery technology. It will compete head-on with the all new Ford F-150 Lightning, which is seeing early signs of success. Demand for Ford’s electric pickup was so strong, that GM’s cross-town rival ramped up F-150 Lighting production nearly twofold. It may not be a stretch to assume that interest in the all-new Chevy EV will show a similar pattern, if not one that’s even more impressive.

The Silverado ZR-2 along with the ZR-2 Bison trims could really help the Silverado gain more of what was lost in sales to RAM within the past nearly 2 years now, I do expect to see plenty of these particular models on the road down here in the South within a year from now, even if half of the customers won’t always use them based on what their built for, we’ll see Ground Effects – Light Kits installed on some of these trucks all over again, not a problem if that’s what works…let’s clear the air on that shall we.
1) half is on the HIGH side, even raptors only have a usage percentage (those that go off road) about double the normal pick up or around 10-15%. Wranglers are about double that. So most won’t use them for what they were designed for and a much smaller percentage will even utilize the lockers.
2) They won’t gain much in lost sales, these won’t add 50k plus in sales to the line up. What is going to happen is those that image buy an AT4 or Trail Boss (which is around 90%) are now going to stretch their budgets even further for these trucks so they can say they have a front locker at the local starbucks when talking to other keeping up with the joneses dads. You will see them around, it just won’t be a big sales adder, especially at the price point. The Raptor doesn’t add much in sales (best guesses are in the 30+40k range) and the TRX even less, so top end off road trims aren’t much in sales movers, just getting people to upsell themselves further in to debt and closer to that 1k a month payment.
I was window shopping a Ram to replace my 2015 one. Ram threw a lot of cash on the hood by COVID standards in June on lower models. Otherwise they may have been looking at a sub 100k quarter in total sales. I think the butch look is really on for trucks today and Ram went with the smooth sides and lots of chrome look this generation. I personally thinky 2015 Ram looks better on the outside than the newer one.
Not sure what the butch look is, but I like chrome and hate black wheels.
Toyota TRD, Chevy Trailboss, GMC AT4 are the tough looking trucks. Black editions have been way overdone but chrome is seen as an old man’s truck these days
It’s a generational thing. I despise lots of chrome and RAM put a ton of chrome on their HD trucks. Then you have to pay them 800-2000 just to tone it down or remove it with cheaper materials. You can’t even get a black side step unless you get the blacked out package.
I definitely prefer GMs exterior designing, even with the awful grills, but RAM is the only one giving you any reasonable value anymore. Plus their seats are a hell of a lot more comfortable.
Black wheels have definitely been over done, the blacked out packages look good with a blue or red truck. Personally I just want some nice matte/semi gloss wheels that won’t look awful in two weeks. I don’t need anything fancy and if I did I definitely wouldn’t be buying from the manufacturer.
Silverado would likely take the lead if GM could get the new trucks to the dealer lots!
Is it just me? It seems there is no sense of urgency around the supply chain issues! Really, is GM that helpless? If so, shame on them.
Show us an auto manufacturer who isn’t having supply chain issues!
Reality is, they all are having shortages. Even Toyota who had a stock pile of chips is now suffering from significant shortages.
It’s scary that we are that dependent as a country now a days, it didn’t used to be that way, we made everything.
Again- whomever has parts can produce trucks. So talk of a sales leader is really a mute point. I have no doubt Ford would do what ever it takes to be the sales leader if they only had parts. A sales leader doesn’t necessarily mean a better truck.
I am really impressed with the body style and the interior of GM trucks.
Really stand out on the road.
And really who cars if a ZR2 ever sees the off road.
All that matters is that your happy with your purchase ….
My Colorado 2.8 diesel sees heavy towing regularly towing my toy hauler and bringing loads of fire wood home. And unloaded gets 30 mpg. Very impressive truck. Big mistake to drop the diesel in the mid size class.
