Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)

Combined Chevy Tahoe and Suburban sales during the second quarter of 2022 keep the Bow Tie brand’s full-size SUVs at the top of their segment when ranked by sales volume. The duo posted a combined 27 percent drop to 29,966 units. Individually, the Tahoe took first place with a 24 percent decrease to 21,069 units, followed by the Tahoe’s corporate cousins, the GMC Yukon (see running GMC Yukon sales) and extended-length Yukon XL, which cumulatively placed second with a 28 percent drop to 17,070 units. The Ford Expedition (see running Ford Expedition sales) placed third with a 48 drop to 13,129 units, while the all-new Jeep Wagoneer placed fourth with 10,220 deliveries, moving over 10K units for the first time since its launch back in Q3 2021. The Suburban, which is an extended-length version of the Tahoe, placed fifth place with a 33 decline to 8,897 units.

The Nissan Armada placed sixth with a 78 percent drop to just 2,897 units, followed by the Toyota Sequoia in last place with a 79 percent drop to just 55 units. Sales of the all-new, 2023 Toyota Sequoia are set to begin later this summer, so the depressed sales of the Sequoia likely represent the Japanese automaker selling off the last remaining units of inventory of the outgoing model.

The GM Authority Take

Combined Chevy Tahoe and Suburban sales enabled the Bow Tie brand to continue leading the mainstream full-size SUV segment. Combined with their corporate cousins, the GMC Yukon and Yukon XL, GM absolutely dominated the space, with an astounding 64 percent of the competitive set at the expense of Ford and Nissan. However, sales of GM’s Chevy and GMC offerings were slightly impacted by the new Jeep Wagoneer, which seems to be earning its keep in the segment. Beyond that, it remains to be seen what impact on sales volume Toyota’s much-needed SUV reboot will have once it arrives at dealerships.

As a reminder, the Tahoe and Suburban were overhauled (re-engineered and redesigned) for the 2021 model year as the 2021 Chevy Tahoe and 2021 Chevy Suburban. The same holds true for the GMC Yukon and Yukon XL, as well as the Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV.

2024 Chevrolet Tahoe refresh prototype

Not one to be caught standing still, GM is already testing a refreshed 2024 Chevy Tahoe and 2024 Suburban. In March, we caught a prototype of the refreshed 2024 Tahoe undergoing testing. The upcoming model will feature revised front and rear fascias, both of which are covered in thick camouflage in this particular prototype. Inside, we expect the refreshed models to bring about larger infotainment screens and other improvements.

Meanwhile, the 2023 Chevy Tahoe and 2023 Chevy Suburban should soon become available to order with GM’s hands-free, semi-autonomous Super Cruise technology for the first time. Production of both models kicked off June 18th at the GM Arlington plant in Texas, but Super Cruise was not available to order at the time production began.

2023 Toyota Sequoia

The newest rival to try and capture a piece of the lucrative full-size SUV pie is the fully redesigned 2023 Toyota Sequoia that was revealed in January as a contender to the regular-wheelbase Tahoe and Yukon. Sales of the new Toyota are set to begin later this summer.

2023 Jeep Wagoneer L and Grand Wagoneer L

Meanwhile, Stellantis has debuted the Jeep Wagoneer L as an extended-length variant of the regular-length Wagoneer. The Wagoneer L will rival GM’s own extended-length offerings, including the Suburban and Yukon XL. Though the Wagoneer is currently enjoying solid rise in sales prominence, time will tell if the Jeep entries will sustain their existing growth rate.

  2. Would be nice if you get one the way you want it. This is my third year ordering and still nothing. For the amount they want,I want only what I want.

  3. GM has dominated this space for a long time. What’s interesting is how GMC was least effected by Wagoneer while the new entry had a devastating impact on Ford. Wagoneer will continue to grow but GMC can keep pace.
