Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)
Chevy Equinox sales during the second quarter of 2022 bumped the crossover to second place in its competitive segment. The Toyota RAV4 continued to lead the pack, despite a seven percent drop in sales to 99,693 units. Even so, that number represents a healthy lead over the second-best Equinox, which experienced a nine percent increase in sales to 60,642 units. Sales of the Honda CR-V, meanwhile, plummeted 51 percent to 58,023 units, allowing the Equinox to regain a leading position in the space.
Sales of all other vehicles within the segment totaled less than 50,000 units each. In fact, the only vehicles aside from the Equinox to be in the green were the Kia Sportage, the Mitsubishi Outlander, and the the Equinox’s corporate cousin, the GMC Terrain (see running GMC Terrain sales).

From a segment share standpoint, the Equinox held down 12 percent segment share, up five percentage points. The RAV4, meanwhile, held a dominant 19 percent share, also up five percentage points. The Honda CR-V dropped to 11 percent share, down five percentage points. The other 13 competitors in the segment each held a segment share in the single digits.
Combining sales of the Equinox and its corporate cousin, the Terrain, accounts for 83,400 units sold. That brings GM closer to the RAV4 in terms of cumulative sales volume, roughly 13,000 units behind the Toyota but still solidly ahead of the CR-V.

Overall, the compact crossover segment contracted 30 percent to 514,490 units, meaning Chevy Equinox sales outperformed the segment average by a substantial margin.
The GM Authority Take
Chevy Equinox sales have finally returned to growth, with the compact crossover placing in a much better position than it did during Q2 2021. The substantial improvement in performance is the result of increased availability thanks to resumed production, which was halted at the GM CAMI plant in Ontario at the end of April as the facility was retooled to support the assembly of the all-electric BrightDrop EV600.
In fact, General Motors recently announced plans to ramp up production of the Equinox and the Terrain in Mexico in order to meet strong demand for the compact crossovers. The increased production should improve supply at the dealer level, resulting in higher sales volumes.
The Chevy Equinox received a refresh for the 2022 model year, representing the fifth model year of the current, third generation model. The refresh consisted of revised front and rear fascias, along with minor interior updates as well as the addition of a sporty-looking RS trim level. Additionally, the 2022 also became slightly more affordable than preceding model year.
Additionally, production of the Equinox for the 2023 model year will commence shortly at the GM San Luis Potosí plant and the GM Ramos Arizpe plan, both of which are located in Mexico.
Looking ahead, the current, internal-combustion-engined Equinox will continue being offered well into the future, while an all-electric version – appropriately called Equinox EV – is expected to become available in late 2023 as a 2024 model year vehicle. The Equinox EV was pre-announced in January 2022 and it will certainly be interesting to observe how Chevy Equinox sales fare as production of the existing ICE model improves while the electric variant hits the market.

They are a good value for the price.
Ford has been left in the dust with Escape and Bronco Sport not doing very well. Maybe vehicles like Corvette & Hummer are having a halo effect boosting GM in key bread & butter segments (Terrain is doing well, too)? Trailblazer, Nox, Traverse, Tahoe, Suburban and Corvette are all doing well returning Chevy to a top 3 brand until you include trucks which are split with GMC to reach #2
New Nox EV looks better than Blazer EV.
In the current environment, sales are not driven by how much people like the product. Sales now are driven by availability.
Car companies are simply unable to meet demand. Say you go to a Ford dealership and they have two Escapes and they don’t have the features and colors you want. Half a mile down the road, the Chevy dealership has twenty Equinoxes, including ones with the features and colors you want. In the abstract, you might prefer the Escape to the Equinox, but you might still buy the Equinox because that’s what’s available.
There is no way it is selling that well with the 1.5 engine in it, it is almost like the people buying it have no idea what is in it or care and is plenty for what they need when they test drive it.
Have you driven one? My wife has the 1.5t in a Premier and I drove it through the Smokey’s loaded with luggage. It would run 70-80 with no issues an still got 29 mpg. That works.
We have the same purchased for my dtr as a family vehicle. I would lose my mind if I needed it as my daily driver. It’s no barn burner.
I was in a 1.5/cvt Malibu and was surprised about the performance with people and luggage onboard. On paper hp don’t tell all the story…
Have you ever driven the 1.5T Nox, or any of the small, modern turbos from GM? They all have very flat torque curves and almost no turbo lag. They feel much faster than they are due to the low end torque and excellent throttle response.
Absolutely true, have been pleasantly surprised with it’s performance and fuel efficiency. Also used almost no oil between 5k mile changes, great engine!
I can’t wait to get the 3.0 turbo diesel in a new Silverado! Same torque as a big gas V-8 with 50% better mileage.
American consumers are pretty gullible and dumb.
But hey they can enjoy having their 1.5 Turbo engine blowing up & costing them $7000 to fix.
I drive one and you are full of crap. It has plenty of pep with it being turbocharged.
My 2019 Blue Equinox LT with the 1.5 engine. roofracks, panaramic sunroof with the 8 inch touchscreen is not just beautiful but it rides and handles as good or even better than the CRV and Rav4. Maybe if GM kept the 2.0 and added a hybrid version as options its sales would be closer to the Rav4. I know they’re adding an Electric version next year but why is GM against hybrids? And why is GM only offering one engine ? I know the take rate was only 7% or so for the 2.0 but seriously give people options. I know when the current Malibu came out in 2016 or so it offered a hybrid that returned an MPG in the mid to high 30’s mpg then it was axed. That hybrid powerplant could’ve be en offered in the Nox and by now it couldve been refined and perfected. I’m not a huge fan of GM management!
Steve: Although I agree GM should have kept some types of Hybrid (why not keep the Volt-tech and put that in many more models). But I think you kind of answered your own question about the 2.0 L. They didn’t keep offering it because the take rate was so low. Again, I may not agree with all decisions GM makes, but it’s kind of like keeping too many sedans around if nobody if buying them. I don’t agree with getting rid of all sedans (Ford, I’m looking at you), but in a market like we have now there is no reason why GM isn’t offering the Malibu as a Buick Regal with upgraded materials and more Buick-like styling. Use those Buick sedan sales to keep that assembly line working more. Doing this would allow GM to keep a couple sedans in the mix (with the two Cadillac’s) for when buyers turn back to sedan models from SUV’s.
That’s kind of the same thing with the 2.0 L vs. the 1.5 L. If that 1.5 is doing a great job and people are buying them with few taking the bigger engine, why keep it? Especially when the Equinox EV is only months away now. And yes, I’ve driven the 1.5 as I currently own a 2021 Malibu LT and I’m quite impressed with the car and engine.
Great products but needs new leadership now before they take the all EV plunge and destroy the company!
GM has to start seriously bombing earnings for Mary to go.
Fortunately we are starting to see signs of just that.
