Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)

Chevy Corvette sales during the second quarter of 2022 enable the sports car to maintain its decisive lead, reporting an eight percent increase in sales to 8,630 units. In fact, the Corvette sold over 5,000 units more than all rivals combined. The Porsche 911 (née Carrera/Targa) remained in second place with a 31 percent jump in sales to 3,052 units – the only other entry in the premium sports car segment to post sales in the thousands. The Mercedes-Benz AMG GT remained in third place in spite of a 14 percent decline in sales to 964 units, just two units ahead of the Porsche 718 (née Cayman/Boxster) which remained in fourth place with a six percent increase in sales to 962 units. The Audi R8 (see running Audi R8 sales) remained in fifth place, posting a 57 percent drop in sales to just 90 units, while Acura NSX sales jumped 79 percent to 77 units. The rest of the field moved a mere 27 units combined.

However, as we’ve noted before, many of the segment contenders cost significantly more than Chevy’s mid-engine sports car and, as a result, these higher-priced rivals typically see lower sales volumes.

The Corvette held a commanding 63 percent segment share, up one percentage point. The 911 held a 22 percent share, up four percentage points. In fact, this Porsche model was the only other entry to post a segment share in the double digits. The AMG GT held a seven percent share, down two percentage points, while the 718 maintained a seven percent share. The R8 and NSX each held a one percent share. The rest of the field essentially represented a rounding error from a segment share standpoint.

Mercedes-Benz is still in the process of changing over to the next-generation SL-Class roadster, and so sales this quarter only came from the AMG GT. The SLC-Class (née SLK-Class) has been discontinued.

The premium sports car segment grew eight percent to 13,802 units in Q2 2022, meaning that Corvette sales outperformed the segment average.

The GM Authority Take

The Corvette C8 continues to dominate its segment as the mid-engine Vette enters its fourth model year. Despite this obvious success, the Corvette would probably obliterate rivals even more if The General could build the sports car fast enough to meet demand.

Incidentally, this has been the case since the 2020 model year introduction of the C8. Even this past April, GM halted production of the C8 Corvette Stingray for a week at its Bowling Green plant in Kentucky due to an unforeseen parts shortage. The automaker also halted production for a week in March for the same reason. These delays forced GM to push the start of production of the 2023 Corvette Stingray from May 9th to May 16th. In spite of that, the Corvette has remained at the top of its segment, with the 2022 Chevy Corvette being ranked among the top ten fastest-selling vehicles in January 2022.

Order books for the the 2023 Chevy Corvette Stingray opened up on March 24th, while the 2023 Corvette Z06 is still coming later this year, with order books for the track-focused variant set to open this spring. Both the 2023 Corvette Stingray and the new 2023 Corvette Z06 will be available as either a hardtop coupe (with a manually-removable roof panel) or as a hardtop convertible.

The heart of the exciting new Z06 is the naturally aspirated 5.5L V8 LT6 gasoline engine, which is the highest-horsepower atmospheric V8 ever fitted to a production vehicle. It produces 670 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque, with redline set for the flat-plane crankshaft V8 at a screaming 8,600 rpm. Output is routed to the rear wheels through Tremec’s eight-speed dual-clutch transmission.

Chevy also introduced the Corvette 70th anniversary edition to celebrate seven decades of Corvette. It will be available on both the Stingray and Z06 models, although ordering has been delayed until earlier this week, when the constraint from the package-specific wheels was removed. Other C8 models still on the way include the Corvette C8 E-Ray (indirectly replacing the initially planned Corvette C8 Grand Sport), Corvette C8 ZR1, and Corvette C8 Zora. In April, GM teased the Corvette E-Ray, saying that a fully electric Corvette will follow.

Looking past North America, Chevy designed the new C8 to be the first ever Vette to be produced from the factory in right-hand layout, with models specced for Europe, Japan, Australia and New Zealand. The C8 will also be sold in China, as GM establishes a new imported vehicle business there to sell Corvettes, among other performance cars and trucks. At the beginning of the year the first Corvette C8 units were delivered in Australia and New Zealand. In February the 2022 Corvette unofficially arrived in Brazil through an import company. In June the 2023 Corvette Stingray received a $15,000 price hike in Australia over the outgoing 2022 model.

While buyers wait for the opportunity to order the Z06 high-revving track beast here in the States, the first retail 2023 Corvette Z06 fetched $3.6 million when it crossed the auction block at the Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale auction back in January. Then the first production 2023 Corvette Z06 convertible sold for $1 million in April.

The future is white hot for the Corvette as Chevy releases more exciting models of the C8 that will launch in more global markets. Just not sure how the The General can build enough of its mid-engine success story to meet record demand that will only grow beyond our shores.

  1. Not everyone got screwed, I ordered a full loaded 22 convertible, drove it for a yr and sold it and still made $15000 profit. It was a very enjoyable car.

  2. I have a 2021, paid MSRP, no regrets. I could not even consider the NSX, Ford GT, GTR, out of my reach

  3. True, it was fun the year my 2021 Vette had “special” status…but having owned a 2005 Ferrari Modena 360 I don’t think most Corvette owners ‘really’ want our Vette’s to be “special”. Ferrari ownership was stupid expensive. Granted they treat you special, they better, you spend a lot of time & money with those guys. $500+ for an oil change, $6-7.5 thousand every 15,000 miles for the major service and I had to do a belt service once, that was another $2,800 (and that was long before these days of massive inflation). Had clutch work coming when I sold it, est $6k. Even if you can afford it…you don’t relish taking your Ferrari for service. Not to mention when trades people see you own a Ferrari, cost of retiling the kitchen just doubled…but no worries, they’ll make you feel ‘special’.
Corvette is often described as the “Working Man’s Sports Car”. I honestly would rather be seen as a ‘working man’ paying reasonable prices for a magnificent vehicle than a wealthy idiot paying ridiculous costs to own a stupid expensive car. I’ve been both guys…I am much happier as “working Bob”.
I paid MSRP for my Vette but had to go the Ed Rinke in Centerline Michigan to find an honest dealer to do it. While the dealers here in the Southwest are still charging a premium over MSRP, I swear before God, those dealers will never get anything from me but warranty work. Humbly suggest you do the same with any dealer that charges over MSRP…they’ll charge you for service in the same overpriced manner.
