The GM Authority Take

Buick Envision sales made a decent showing against rivals while the entire segment was down during the second quarter of 2022. In addition, GM’s combined offerings of the Envision and Cadillac XT4 catapulted the automaker to the top.

Any sales performance hits have been the direct result of production disruptions associated with (but not limited to) the ongoing global semiconductor chip shortage. Even in June, Envision inventory was tight due to plant shutdown and transportation complications.

Even production of the 2023 Buick Envision has been pushed back to August after originally planned for early April. The 2023 Envision will represent the third model year of the premium compact crossover’s second generation. It is assembled at the GM Jinqiao plant in Shanghai, China, and then distributed to each of the four markets where the Buick brand does business: the United States, Canada, and Mexico (comprising the North American market), as well as locally across China.

The 2022 Buick Envision remains a strong model for the premium automaker, listed among the best new crossovers under $40,000 by Consumer Reports following a recognition just a few months earlier, where the publication named the 2021 Buick Envision a top luxury SUV to buy. The 2022 Envision saw minor changes and updates over the 2021 previous year.

As a reminder, the 2021 Buick Envision was completely overhauled (redesigned and re-engineered). Besides an all-new platform, mechanicals, exterior design and cabin, the 2021 Envision added the Avenir as the range-topping trim, a first for the Envision nameplate.

The 2023 model will remain largely unchanged from the current 2022 model year, save for a few changes to the color palette and package lineup. The crossover will continue to be powered by GM’s turbocharged 2.0L four-cylinder LSY gasoline engine, rated at 228 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, as the only engine offering in North America. The four-cylinder is paired with the GM nine-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel-drive is standard, while all-wheel-drive is optional.

With the departure of the “regular” (non-GX) Buick Encore after the 2022 model year, Buick plans to fill its fourth crossover slot with a three-row variant of the Buick Envision, like the one it currently sells in China. It is expected to debut in North America within the next few months, possibly as the Envision GX. In China, the vehicle is marketed as the Envision Plus. The new model will fill the space between the compact Envision and the full-size Enclave in Buick’s crossover lineup, with the marque’s smallest crossover becoming the Encore GX.

As with most of its models, GM’s biggest challenge remains addressing supply chain issues and related production interruptions, a set of circumstances faced by the entire auto industry at large. Solving this dilemma is key to increasing sales and propelling the automaker to become king of any space in which it competes. The Envision continues to offer a compelling, premium option for buyers if GM can just make enough of them.

GM needs to get their act together already….can’t sell cars if you don’t build them…..been trying to buy an Envision for over a year now from my LOCAL dealer….they won’t even take an order for one….will start looking at other manufacturers if my Buick dealer doesn’t get vehicles in during the next few months….and I am not willing to pay extra to replace my current Envision….just a really bad way to run a business….GM and the dealers

I’ve been looking for an Envision for awhile now, too. I was planning to order, if we couldn’t find one in the next couple of months. My salesman knew exactly what I wanted and he was able to do a dealer to dealer trade with a dealership in OH this week (I live in MI). I just picked up my 1st Envision yesterday!

I traveled from Ohio (local dealer had none in stock) to Michigan last Fall to get our new ’22 Envision. It looks great with the ST package, get lots of compliments. I also prefer the smaller size than the Enclaves we had in the past.

Fortunately, I didn’t have to drive to OH to get mine. It was delivered on Tuesday, but due to my work schedule I wasn’t able to go in to get it until yesterday. When I walked into the showroom and noticed another couple sitting in “my car”, my heart sank. I hadn’t signed anything yet, just a verbal agreement between myself and the dealer, so I thought that they sold it to them! I upgraded and downsized…my previous vehicle was a 2007 Saturn Outlook, which is similar in size to the Enclave.

I wouldn’t consider a Buick to be in the same category with Lexus, Mercedes-Benz, Lincoln, BMW or any the other luxury makes cited in this article. Rather than say it’s in fourth place among brands it doesn’t truly compete with, the question is how does it fare amongst crossovers sold by lower tier brands such as Honda, Mazda or Volkswagen.

There was a time of course when Buick was one notch below Cadillac and was a premium brand but today they’re merely an importer of Korean-built, rebadged Opel Mokkas and this Chinese Envision with no real luxury offerings, like an M-B S-class or SL or the Lexus LS and LC to elevate the brand into the luxury realm.

Exactly, Buick used to be a name associated with quality and some luxury amenities. but they never were in the league of brands such as Lincoln or Cadillac. Its absurd to compare this smallish, chinese made suv to a Lincoln or Mercedes! but even the mighty Cadillac brand is not what it once was. Except for the escalade, they are all rather small and unimpressive looking. they are reaching for “sporty” with a brand thats been known for generations as luxury. But those “luxury days are gone now at cadillac. Lincoln seems to be trying to hold onto their “luxury” DNA with vehicles such as the Aviator and Navigator. If only they could iron out flaws in early production models better. but their CEO, Farley seems to be on that now.

Can’t sell them when they are sitting in the lots with chips needed. Ordered a Buick Enclave n it’s been 10 months!!!! Sitting in Lansing lot since May 5,2022 completed and needs nothing. It’s all paid for and insured but they can’t get the right carriers to ship it to Marlette! If it wasn’t for being good friends with the dealer I would have went elsewhere. Just pisses me off. Wonder if I get a discount since they are starting 2023???
