2023 GMC Canyon: Spy Shots Confirm CornerStep Bumpers

When GM Authority spied the 2023 GMC Canyon undergoing testing last month and several times before that, it wasn’t immediately clear if the upcoming overhaul to the midsize pickup would feature CornerStep. But now, a new set of spy shots clearly shows the CornerStep bumper as being part of the 2023 Canyon.

Prior to our spies catching up to this prototype, the camouflage on other 2023 Canyon prototypes made it difficult to discern whether or not CornerStep was present. Indeed, camo artists did a fine job wrapping those 2023 GMC Canyon prototypes. But our new photos clearly show the step – which has been a hallmark of GM trucks since the 2014 model year – present and accounted for.

As a reminder, GM’s CornerStep bumper allows for ease of access to the Canyon’s bed without having to lower the tailgate. The step itself is integrated into the corner of the rear bumper, and features a textured pad for better grip when stepping into it. There are also handholds incorporated into the box rail protectors for extra security.

The GMC Canyon – along with its corporate cousin, the 2023 Chevy Colorado –  will be overhauled (redesigned and re-engineered) for the 2023 model year. While both trucks will continue to ride on the GMT-31XX platform that underpins the current models, almost all remaining elements will be updated.

Under the hood, the midsizers will feature the turbocharged 2.7L I4 L3B gasoline engine, which is capable of 310 horsepower and 430 pound-feet of torque in the 2022 GMC Sierra 1500. That engine will bolt to GM’s 10-speed automatic transmission, and power will be routed via a rear-wheel-drive drivetrain or optional four-wheel-drive.

GMC recently teased the upcoming 2023 GMC Canyon AT4X, giving us our first glimpse at the redesigned model and a new addition to the Canyon model range. Much like the larger Sierra, the Canyon AT4X will expand the AT4 model range as a more capable off-road offering via an upgraded suspension, larger tires, along with skid plates and rock rails, allowing buyers to hit the trail after driving the truck from the dealer’s lot.

Production of the 2023 GMC Canyon will take place at the GM Wentzville facility in Missouri for global markets. Assembly is set to begin either at the end of Q4 2022 or during Q1 2023.

  1. Any insight to a crew cab long bed? Glad to see the corner steps, they’ve been very useful.

    1. It will be made available, but not during initial launch. All of the launch cycle models, it seems, are of crew cab short bed variety.

  2. So what they are saying is that they porkified even the midsize truck to the point you have to have a step in the side of the bumper to get something out of the bed?

    1. Or you could say for no additional cost if your lifting something heavy out of the bed you can easily get and advantageous vantage point, or if your part of the shorter community, you have easier access. While these trucks do ride higher than some of their earlier counterparts, they are still small, and much of that height is due to larger wheels and added ground clearance. IDK if I would use the term porky by any means

    2. It’s in the current bumper too. I have a ’17 Colorado and love that step.

  4. Any word on the multi gate. I want the option available, hopefully.wider bucket seating. I don’t need a huge console. Rather the seats a few inches wider. And I think people looking at this segment have waited long enough to get the long bed on roll out. Short box is useless to me.
